Pale Saint

I have been reading library copies of Lustbader's books, but could not find a copy of Pale Saint in any nearby location, or any evidence that this book has been published in the United States--even though the characters and setting are American. The book does not have the strong oriental themes that characterize Lustbader's fiction, but does have the common themes of esoteric consciousness. I was surprised at the price and enjoyed having a book sent from Germany. I hope that other Lustbader readers will take advantage of its cost and availability. It is an interesting read.

light and enlightening readingfor the beginner

I read this book on a whim and was surprised at how easily it was understood. The complicated concepts were explained so that anyone could understand them. This book takes a light and accurate approach to a subject full of misconceptions and apprehension for most people. I would recommend this book to anyone nominally interested in astronomy and science fiction, or for anyone who has never seen a satellite in orbit from earth (many are visible to the naked eye). Tom Logsdon writes clearly and intelligently making this subject accessible for most people.

Wish more books were like this

This is one of the most clearly written, easy to understand books I have ever read! Tom Logsdon is a gifted writer. There are hundreds, if not thousands of people knowledgeable enough to write a book on orbital mechanics. But only a handful can explain the subject with such clarity. And fewer still can write in the interesting fashion that Logsdon went for.

Pleasant explanation - and exploration - of Orbital Mechanics

Fun read. I wish all textbooks were like this. The author enlivens the theory of Orbital Mechanics by explaining its history and the colorful personalities of historic figures. The discussion of applications is still very useful, even though the book is a decade old. I think an updated second addition would easily win 5 stars.

Great resource, except for the price guide

I agree with those who say that this book is a great reference.
This has a lot of information that is generaly hard to find, especially since general information is hard to find as it is. Most guides like this are for a specificly for one type or area of scouting collectables (OA Flaps etc.). This one does a great job of trying to gather as much as possible in one volume. Lots of photos (too bad that only a few are in color) and drawings, could use more, but then you would run out of room.

The main problem I have, is with the actual price guide. It is far from realistic. As a new collector, I brought this guide to local "Trade-O-Rees", (aka "TOR")to see how accurate it was. I was very surprised, to see that it was not even close for most of the items I checked (I was at the many TORs I visited for at least 2-3 days each).
When I asked the collectors there why this was, they replied that ebay and other internet auction sites had made collecting much easier and cheaper.

But the comment I heard over and over again was that the author had deliberatly listed the items he had at high prices and the items he needed at very low prices. True or false I don't know.

But Over all, NONE of the collectors that I met used this book for its price guide, they used it as a general reference guide. That was the advice I received by more than a dozen collectors.

To follow up, Great reference guide (but needs more color photos), poor price guide.

I was disappointed in this publication. Its prices seemed to be obsolete. That, of course, is only my opinion. I had peviously been a hyperactive collector and the values did not agree with my personal experience.

Its a great resource for those interested in any and all scouting material. There are pictures of most items,which helps. The only down side is that it is dated,copyrighted 2001,so prices are problematic. An update would be of great use!

Jeffrey M. Perloff is a professor in and chair of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California at Berkeley. His textbooks are Modern Industrial Organization (co-authored with Dennis Carlton) and Microeconomics. Professor Perloff has been an editor of Industrial Relations and an associate editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics. serious book for serious ADVANCED students

I am a student at the University of Michigan and this is the book we use for our intermediate microeconomics theory class. To start, this is NOT the book for you if you are weak in math (ie. can't stand calculus) and lack a solid understanding of basic microeconomics. If you are only trying to get the fundamentals, like say, how monopolies behave in a market economy or what a supply and demand curve looks like then go for the one by Pindyck. This book is for those who want to gain a DEEPER understanding of micro. Like given a trade between two individuals, what would be the equilibrium bundle reached by both parties considering their unique indifference curves. And how much would a consumer demand given a budget constraint. These are some of the topics covered in this book and Perloff has done a superb job showing the concepts.

The math in this textbook is somewhat advanced for the average undergraduate. if you don't know what a partial derivative is, then you will be lost. There are some first order differential equations and Lagrangians in there as well. In order to get the most out of this book I would say you need to have a solid understanding of calculus I and II, and a basic knowledge of III and IV. The concepts themselves aren't that complicated it's just that Perloff uses a lot of calculus to show them. But like I said, if you ARE good at math then this book will tell you more about intermediate micro and leave you with a far better theoretical background than any other.

Indeed, this is arguably the BEST undergraduate textbook for intermediate microeconomics. It's written like how a true microeconomics theorist would write it, and it is way better than the classic by Varian. The book actually shows you the mathematical derivations behind the concepts and Perloff always cut to the heart of the issue and explain things in the most succinct manner. Plus there's also a ton of problems after each chapter with solutions in the back. Given the fact that microeconomics theory is essentially a physics or a math class, Perloff's book gets an A+ for giving students lots of problems to work on. Without which anyone would be lost on a quantitative based exam.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book for anyone with a serious interest in microeconomics and/or a desire to pursue micro theory at a graduate level later on.

An okay book

This book was used for my microeconomics class. It helped me learn the material, but there's still room for improvement.
Having the textbook be so focused on specific examples was not such a good idea, because it made it difficult to understand what do to in a more general problem, or in any problem that deviates from this example. The discussions of concepts, however, were excellent.
I wish the derivations were more integrated into the text instead of in an appendix in the back, and that they were better explained - it's frustrating to spend an hour trying to figure out which steps were left out. The problems in the textbook were challenging but good, however, unless you're at least a econ grad student or some kind of genius, you're probably not going to be able to do many of them just by reading the textbook...which brings me to my last point...if you're taking a class in which this book is mandatory, by all means, get it, it's useful...but if you are trying to learn or brush up on micro without the aid of a class, look for another book

Read carefully and be prepared

I'm an engineering student who decided to take an intermediate microeconomics class to satisfy some elective degree requirement. I didn't know what I was getting myself into with this course: previously this class was taught at the 400 level, with a prerequisite introductory microeconomics taught at the 300 level, then the econ department pulled a fast one on us, and replaced both courses with this one and re-numbered it at 300 level, with no pre-reqs. The class is now known as having incredibly low averages because many students struggle with the difficulty of tackling these mid-level concepts without the introductory prerequisite class.

This book is pretty unpopular among my fellow students in my intermediate microeconomics class, but in hindsight - with my hardly sought after "A" locked safely into place :) - I can say that the textbook is pretty good when taken for what it is: a serious mid-level, calculus-based microeconomics book. It requires the reader to spend time and effort into reading every sentence, and it can be dense and even confusing at times. Either the concepts become better written as you venture into chapters 10-14, or I became better at digesting it, because for me the book was easier to read as I progressed.

Low parts:
When the author works through specific examples, it can be long and drawn out. The disadvantage is that often the intuition behind the concepts (intuition that could be generalized) is hidden inside the specific example problems, so you never know if you can skip portions that are just doing some number crunching because sometimes some core concept are embedded in them.
Also, some portions are just plain written poorly and are difficult to read through. Part of this is because Micro-theory isn't always the most interesting thing to learn and there is a certain amount of trudging involved.

High parts:
The beginning chapters and end of chapter summaries are helpful and concise. The author typically underlines important concepts, and often there are some portions of the chapter where he really generalizes well and hits on all cylinders explaining the concepts clearly.

Sometimes there will be several pages without much really important content, but then there will be a page where everything on it is gold. The biggest difficulty is really sorting out what is necessary and what is extraneous.

Like others have said, you better have had a solid introductory calculus sequence or don't even bother with this. As an engineering major this wasn't an issue for me, but this experience would be unfathomable without a solid background (A or B) in single and multivariate calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. The math itself is not mechanically difficult to solve, but you need to understand the concept behind, say, a Lagrangian, or the null-space. There are other engineering majors and even math majors in the class with me who are struggling, (granted they are C students).

Overall, it's not the worst textbook I've had, but in engineering we often get some pretty bad textbooks, so maybe I'm just immune.

The late Sam Walton was one of the shrewdest and richest merchants in America. Centered on the building of his Wal-Mart empire, his book, like fellow magnate Sandra Kurtzig's CEO: Building a $400 Million Company from Ground Up ( LJ 5/1/91), is light on biography. However, readers will enjoy the folksy narrative of the small-town millionaire who revolutionized retail distribution. Walton also addresses accusations against him, such as running the competition out of town. Coauthor Huey does a fine job of incorporating candid testimonials from family members and associates, who thought Walton's ideas were sometimes silly. Shortly after Walton's death, the book was given an overly sentimental postscript (a minor detraction) and rushed into print. Highly recommended for public and academic business collections.

What can I say: This is a brilliantly written book about an incredible individual telling his spectacular success story. If you're reading this review, do yourself a favor: stop wasting time and start reading this book instead.

If you're still foolishly reading my review, here's why I love this book so much:
- Sam tells his story from beginning to end, and explains his thinking and principles behind his decisions. He is extremely humble and down to earth.
- Sam will tell a story from his point of few and then on the next page, there will be long quote from someone involved giving their angle on the same story.
- I did my MBA a few years ago; this book should have been required reading. Anyone who understands Sam's principles and applies them will be extremely successful.

Lastly, the people who haven't even read this book and are giving it one star reviews...I hope someday they accomplish enough in life to be worthy to lick Sam's shoes. I wonder if anyone has ever worked harder, improved the lives of more people, and took less for himself than Sam Walton.

The USA is in desperate need of an education on free trade and economics. People believe that trade, robots, etc "destroy jobs." While you are hating robots and trade, why not add shovels to your list? One shovel destroys the jobs of 100 men digging with spoons. Don't stop at shovels. Every tool that improves efficiency and makes our lives better "destroys" jobs.

The secret to high paying jobs and being able to pay employees the highest wage possible is to give them the best tools possible so they can maximize their production. Every job that is eliminated by increased efficiency frees up a worker to do something else. After you're done reading this book, read Henry Ford's "My Life and Work." He paid extremely high wages and constantly hired more people while constantly cutting costs and improving efficiency.

As unassuming -and wise- as its author, Sam Walton

"Made in America" is as unassuming as its author, Sam Walton. It is written in very colloquial plain "American" English, so you can almost image Mr. Walton, in his death bed, dictating this little book of wisdom. It is filled with many pearls of wisdom, on how to be a small business owner, on never giving up and always trying new things. I am surprised more people don't read this little known book, given that Sam Walton has to go down in history (maybe Bill Gates?) as the most successful entrepreneur in American history. The book is not filled with technical lexicon found in MBA programs. It is a non nonsense book, told from Walton's perspective. I recommend this book.

All I can say is when reading this Sam seems like such a good ol boy. A story starting with his humble beginnings, oh, and how he'd work his store managers constantly, yea lotta them got rich in the process. Decent, honest, family man, who started out with a few Ben a Franklin stores. He, saw what was happening in the sixties, big stores like K Mart, Moreway, Arlans, etc. He wanted to compete, well you know who won ! Despite those who dislike Walmart and refuse to step inside, you really need to admit that they have driven prices down. But, the cost had been the small business owner, and small town / and city business districts have been mostly laid to ruin. It was bound to happen, just like it has in most other catagories, retail and wholesale. Just a few major players.
