About the Author

John Reynard is a consultant urological surgeon based in Oxford. He also provides a specialist neurourological service for patients with spinal cord injury at the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He has published widely in the field of neurourology. He teaches medical students from the University of Oxford Clinical Medical on a variety of topics and has written several books on urological subjects for both medical students and trainee surgeons.


Mr Simon F Brewster Bsc MD FRCS (Urol.) is Consultant Urological Surgeon and Clinical Director at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery, Oxford University. His main clinical and research interest is prostate cancer, with over 50 journal publications and contributions in 3 textbooks. He is former Secretary of the British Prostate Group and Board member of the European Society of Oncological Urologists. Simon enjoys teaching students and junior doctors, and is a MB Finals examiner.


Suzanne Biers qualified from St. George's Hospital Medical School, London University in 1998, with a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc Hons) in Physiology and Medical Sciences, and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery Degrees (MBBS) with distinction in surgery. Basic surgical training was completed at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. Urology training and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) postgraduate degree in Physiology and Pharmacology of the bladder was conducted at the Churchill Hospital, and the Oxford University Department of Pharmacology in Oxford. She was awarded the John Blandy Prize in 2007 from the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) and the British Journal of Urology International (BJU Int.) relating to research publications. Ms Biers is now a senior Urology Specialist Registrar in the Wessex Deanery, based in the south of England.

Electrokinetic Phenomena

This book is extremely well written and comprehensive. The fundamentals of electrokinetics are laid out in the first six or seven chapters followed by a discussion of each of the main topical areas in the field. Coagulation and deposition are also discussed which is a bonus. The book ends with two chapters on Numerical Simulations and Applications respectively which are very useful.

I teach a class in electrokinetics and may use this text in the future.

... and each to his own. As one reviewer would like to have seen more insights into the people, I would have liked to have seen more detail of the guitar parts: the pickups, the wiring, the bridges, vibrato units etc. But you can't have everything.

My congratulations to Tony for a fantastic job. The research is painstaking and the extent he has gone to, have virtually everything he says backed up by one or more individuals who can authenticate his statements makes the book what we've come to expect from TB: an encyclopaedic reference.

Many thanks Tony and a thoroughly reccomendable read.

Fender Electric Guitar Book Complete history of Fender Instruments

This book for those of us Guitar nerds who love Fender instruments. It duplicates the history of the Telecaster somewhat and the Telecaster History has a bit more helpful stuff on dating of Telecasters. I would liked a bit more information about the staff in the pre-CBS years (who were these people who were signing the neck and bodies of the old Teles), the methods of production (were they effectively hand built) and levels of production generally year by year. If you are thinking of buying a vintage Tele or Strat you should definately buy this book along with Gruhn's guide to Vintage Guitars. Even if you are not then its an interesting read.

Some unusual Fenderiana trivia here

Outlines the history of the world's largest guitarmaker, whose products (guitars, basses, amps) have broadly influenced the sound of modern popular music. Unusually, this book focuses only on guitars -- with only passing mention of Fender's influential bass guitars, amps, pedal steels, and other gear.

The whole book alternates a spread of two text pages, then a spread of photos, etc. etc. (Followed by a reference section about model history.) Like other books by this author, it's meticulously detailed -- in the British style -- to please the guitar obsessive lurking inside some of us. Repeated recitations of a given year's Fender model and price list suggest some narrowcasting to music-industry professionals. But you can skip over those.

Distinctively, this book contains some recollections from Fender insiders which I haven't read elsewhere. If they're true, Leo Fender was even quirkier a genius than we already knew.

It's been widely reported elsewhere that Leo couldn't stand F.C. Hall, the initial distributor who advanced much of the capital that Leo needed to start manufacturing. (Hall later headed up Rickenbacker.) But here, Dale Hyatt recalls that Leo wasn't even on speaking terms with Hall's successor, Don Randall -- whose marketing and sales savvy was vital to absolutely ensuring that Fender products stayed enticing and got noticed.

With no hard feelings, Leo also burned out his initial partner, Doc Kauffman -- who sold out because he couldn't keep up with Leo's obsessive work around the clock.

For details on just how haphazardly the Fender company was managed after selling out to CBS, I recommend Bacon's fine book on Fender's Squier off-brand. Impulsive changes of direction nearly ran Fender out of existence several times.

It was saved in the 1980s primarily thanks to the high-quality supply chain provided by its Japanese contract manufacturers -- and thanks to some blank checks written by its Japanese distributors, who couldn't bear to see an American icon destroy itself through greed and short-sighted mismanagement. Japanese vendors even designed Fender's new Mexican factory, establishing that operation's consistently high standards.

The 1985 leveraged buyout by good managers (who'd been recruited from Yamaha) saved Fender from permanent destruction and liquidation by CBS. But it wouldn't have worked without the Japanese partners who taught Fender how to make good stuff again.

They relayed the torches of Leo's quirky genius and Randall's disciplined planning. Sharp designer/marketers like Dan Smith took it from there.

About the Author
Anthony S. Pitch is the author of “They Have Killed Papa Dead!” on the Lincoln assassination, The Burning of Washington: The British Invasion of 1814, and Our Crime Was Being Jewish. A journalist on four continents, he has appeared on C-SPAN TV, the History Channel, National Geographic TV, Book TV, NPR, and PBS. He lives in Potomac, Maryland.

Compelling Story of a Hideous and Historical Crime

It is not possible to read this account of a lynching in postwar Georgia without feeling a burning sense of anger with each passing page. On a summer day in 1946 four black people (one of them a decorated WWII vet) were lynched near the Moore's Ford bridge in a small Georgia farming community. The deed aroused strong national attention, particularly drawing the personal attention of President Harry Truman and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. The scene shortly was over-run by local and state investigators plus a plethora of FBI agents. You would think such a formidable law response would produce the murderers in short order. But it was not to be. Fear and intimidation of the black community and a general campaign of silence in the white pretty much put the kabosh on meaningful testimony to a grand jury. In the end, no one was convicted of the crime. They got away with it. Today, 70 years after the obscenity, Pitch and others are trying heroically to find missing documents and pursue the case to its final accounting. It will be a long-shot. In the meantime, Pitch's book will remind modern readers that there once existed in America places where a culture of lynching of Afro-Americas was practiced and accepted. We may have come a long way since then, but Pitch's compelling, very well-researched-and- written book memorializes the victims and -- who knows -- may lead some day to an accounting of the evil that lurked behind the monstrous crime that occurred near that Georgia bridge that day.

A great book for beginner computer musicians

If you're new to the world of composing music on computers, this is the book for you. It offers a gentle and very clearly written introduction to the world of computer music production. Taking you step by step on the different parts of the process to get a complete song or track.

A good book on basic music theory (such as his other book 'Music theory for computer musician's ) is a good addendum to this one, with both serving as a good introductory guide into the process of composing and producing music on the computer.

Michael's writing style is very clear and focused so it's easy to follow along with all the examples and information he provides. The CD accompaniment to the book further helps to clarify every example.

I definitely recommend this book to anybody who is keen on taking their music production skills to the next level.

I'm almost completely new to the field of music composition. But this book has been really great at getting me accustomed to the field. Even if you're in the intermediate stages of music composition, I would still recommend this book. I read Hewitt's other book, Music Theory for Computer Musicians, and I feel that these two books together are invaluable to musicians.

About 60 years from now, SeeNet journalist and narrator Andrew Worth (he has a camera and computer software hardwired into his body) muscles in on a colleague's assignment to cover a physics convention on the artificial coral island, Stateless, at which Nobel laureate Violet Mosala is expected to announce a watertight Theory of Everything (TOE). The event, however, is complicated by the presence of several noisy anti-science cult groups--among them the mysterious and secretive Anthrocosmologists who believe that whoever first formulates the TOE will become the Keystone in which the completed TOE, mingling information theory with particle physics, will actually change the structure of the universe. Andrew's Anthrocosmology contact, Akili Kuwale, a ``gender migrant'' (s/he has no breasts or sexual organs), warns that a particularly violent, extreme faction intends to assassinate Violet to prevent the Aleph Moment when the completed TOE's effects kick in. Soon, Andrew falls sick--the extremists have infected him, intending that he pass the virus on to Violet; she falls ill, but has arranged for supercomputers to complete her calculations and disseminate the results. As the extremists redouble their violent efforts, Stateless's former owners send mercenaries to recapture the island, while a sort of reverse echo of the Aleph Moment results in a wave of mass insanity, or Distress, whose victims apparently have all turned into Keystones! Bioengineering, cosmological physics, murder. Top notch.

(I read the UK paperback.) Greg Egan is currently the best
hard sf writer I know of. He writes science fiction the
way it SHOULD be: imaginative yet plausible, stuff that
makes you think, stuff that draws on real science rather
than warp-space hyper-rubbish.

Egan's novels are pretty good but his short stories are
really excellent. It's interesting that, although "Distress" is a novel, it opens
with a series of interviews (the protagonist is a
journalist), each one of which is like a mini-short story
about some aspect of biotechnology. This plays to Egan's strength: idea, idea, idea. However, after a while the
story settles down to the
central plot, about a theoretical physicist whose life
is endangered by a lunatic group with some strange ideas
about cosmology.

I strongly recommend this book. It deserves a 10 for
ideas; I am downgrading it to a 9 because other aspects
of Egan's writing could still be improved.

A science fiction gem.

Distress is not only the best of Egan's novels that I've yet read, but one of the most inventive and accomplished sf novels I've read in many years. Andrew Worth is a science journalist in a world populated with ignorance cultists, voluntary autists, and gender migrants. Having finished the 'frankenscience' series Junk DNA, he turns down an offer to tape a show on the newly endemic Acute Clinical Anxiety Syndrome (a.k.a Distress), to compile a profile of quantum physicist Violet Mosala, currently at work on a Theory of Everything, or TOE. Worth leaves Sydney and his marriage (both in ruins), and travels to Stateless, a utopian anarchy on an island constructed with pirated biotech. Plots against both Mosala and Stateless escalate as the novel heads towards an astonishing climax. While Egan is best known for his ideas - and there are more ideas in the first chapter of this book than in many sf novels - his characterization in this book is excellent: Worth is a well-rounded character with his own opinions and motivation, Mosala is a welcome example of a fictional sane scientist, and the asex Akili Kuwale is a masterpiece of sf characterization.

Truth disguised as "bad" science fiction (with a bad audio-book narration)

I tend to describe this book as "truth, disguised as bad sci-fi". And it kind of is both.

I first read this book almost 2 decades ago. At the time I remember it as a nice, solid, near-future sci-fi book. What I remembered most from that first read was just how believable and interesting the genetic engineering aspects of the world were.

I remember thinking to myself that "yes - if biotech is to do in the near future what information-tech did in the near past - this is what it would look like".

Similar to Larry Niven's "Flash Crowd", which is the first realistic description of a society with teleporters I ever saw, this book was the first realistic description of a society with advanced biotech I ever saw.

So that's what I thought about the first time I read it - an enjoyable sci-fi book with good science but bad characters. You know the kind - where all the characters are "too logical" and only exist to explain the science.

Around a decade later, I got an itch to re-read the book. Took me a couple of years to track it down in a second hand book store.

I re-read it - and to my amazement I found that almost all my opinions about society, sexuality, social justice, and "people" in general were in this book. Opinions and views that I thought I developed on my own from observations of the world - I found spelled out almost identical in this book.

Without me realizing it - this book has completely shaped my world view. Even re-reading it, I don't know *how* it did it. The ideas are conveyed... poorly, in the usual manner of sci-fi books, using flat characters and spoon-feedingly-long conversations. Yet there you have it.

I would recommend this book to everyone. Not the audio-book though - that's horrible. Whoever narrated it has no business narrating anything.
