This heartfelt story grabbed my attention & kept it occupied until the end. Behind Closed Doors had a well written detailed storyline as the content examined an unfortunate traumatic situation. I thought A.L. Smith provided pertinent background information to better understand Sierra, Latrice & Alex & how they dealt with issues in their adult lives. Great read & cover color scheme that I highly recommend all! --Dee Cherry Behind Closed Doors is a fresh view of the fallout from childhood sexual abuse. The characters, Alex, Sierra, and Latrice's individual stories are detailed in a diary-like concept to allow the reader to understand their perspective lives. Andre Gerard Smith II, known by many as Dre, is a native of Plymouth, a rural, family oriented town near the Atlantic Coast of North Carolina. He attended Plymouth High School where he was an honor student, and served as an active member of various clubs and organizations. Immediately after, he furthered his education at East Carolina University and in 2008, relocated to Raleigh, NC, where he began a professional career. In his free time, Andre enjoys spending time with family and close friends, traveling, reading, and writing.

Very well-written and heartfelt story

It's not often that such a serious subject as sexual abuse can be tackled in a fictional tale and be done with dignity and grace, while also entertaining the reader with a good story. This is exactly what author A.L. Smith accomplishes with her novel, "Behind Closed Doors". A story of three sisters, Sierra, Alex and Latrice, who suffered greatly while growing up at the hands of a family member. They go their separate ways, only to reunite and find a great resolution for all involved. A very engaging story that pulled at my heartstrings and definitely kept me turning pages. Looking forward to reading part two of this series. Well done.

Great revamp to Book 1! Kudos A.L. Smith!

Great read! I love how A.L. Smith revamped this story to incorporate one of the characters from book 2. I also love the updated ending of the book. This story line is real life as things like this gets swept under the rug and the victims suffer in silence because molestation by a family member goes ignored or the victim is blamed or called fast or loose. The molestation stopped at generation 4 due to one of the victims in this generation putting an end to it before her own child was affected. A.L. Smith kudos to you on the revamp! I enjoyed this book as good as the first version of this book....Keep on writing as you have a wonderful gift that keeps me turning the pages. Patiently waiting on Book 3 to see how this series continues...If I could give a 10 or more stars I would definitely do so. Great job by a wonderful author! Keep on writing as this is definitely your calling!

It's no fun when your life is turned inside out.

This was my first read by this author and I was awe struck at how talented she is and how raw and heart filled this story was. This story had me revisiting my own story and rooting for the ladies as they sought some kind of relief. This is truly a story that should be read by anyone who has suffered trauma or incest. Even if you haven't it is still a good story. Kudos, to a great author who is well on her way.

I think that Yelena Mazour-Matusevich has it right. This is a great book. Many books have changed my life, but it might well have been this book that got me in position, oh so many years ago, that all those other books could change my life. Fall here, ye mighty, for you are nothing but us. If we can actively stop believing that you're high, and do something about the cessation of belief, then we all have a fighting chance. Fall here, ye mighty: Peter Stallybrass and the late, lamented, oh so lamented, Allon White, have cleared you a spot. Fall.

Another thing: if ever a book need to be reissued at a reasonable price, this is it. Fall, princes, fall, prices.

unforgettable book

I have been citing this brilliant book for years now. It is very sad that people, especially academics, don't take time to place comments on their colleague's work. It is a shame. This is profound, and absolutely engaging. I love it and keep going back to it. The tragically early death of Allon White cut short his career. I wish he knew what a great book he and his best friend have written. Highly recommend.

About the Author

Peter M. Tiidus, PhD, is a professor and former chair of the department of kinesiology and physical education at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. For more than 30 years, he has focused his research on the physiological mechanisms of and practical interventions in muscle damage and repair, employing both animal models and human subjects.

Tiidus has authored more than 80 publications and presented his research in multiple lectures and conference presentations on estrogen and muscle damage, inflammation, and repair and the influence of treatment interventions on muscle recovery from damage and physiological responses. He currently serves as an editorial board member for Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. He is also a former member of the board of directors of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.

A. Russell Tupling, PhD, is an associate professor in the department of kinesiology at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. His research program, which is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, is dedicated to the understanding of the regulation of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) function in muscle and understanding how defects in the function of SR proteins that occur with oxidative stress contribute to fatigue, weakness, and disease. In 2009, he received an Early Research Award from the Government of Ontario to conduct research examining a potential link between Ca2+ pump energetics in muscle and metabolic disorders.

Tupling has 49 peer-reviewed publications in scholarly journals and over 70 conference abstracts based on his research. In 2010, he won the Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision, which was established by the University of Waterloo in recognition of exemplary faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in graduate student supervision. Tupling is a member of the American Physiological Society and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP). He was invited to give the inaugural Mike Houston Tutorial Lecture in Skeletal Muscle at the CSEP conference in 2009.

Michael E. Houston, PhD, received his undergraduate training in biochemistry from the University of Toronto and his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Waterloo. A superb athlete and lifelong exercise fanatic, he was able to integrate his training in biochemistry with his love of exercise sciences and to forge a career as a teacher and scientist in the field of kinesiology. For almost 40 years during his career, he authored more than 100 refereed publications and taught courses on the biochemistry of exercise to many undergraduate and graduate students. In 2003, he was presented with the Honour Award from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology in acknowledgment of his lifetime contribution to research and education in exercise science.

Houston was the author of the first three editions of Biochemistry Primer for Exercise Science. This fourth edition, which is built on his body of work, still incorporates a major portion of his third edition. Dr. Houston passed away in 2008.

Great Reference!

This is a great reference book. Very detailed. Very descriptive. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in exercise science.

Good reference source. I would prefer color graphics and a hardcover addition.
The science is accurate, and comprehensive enough for advanced exercise physiology class.
