Great basics!

I'm a girl. I say this only to illustrate the fact that, although my Dad and stepbrother restore cars, my stepdad was a Cadillac mechanic and my brother went to WyoTech, I was not taught anything other than how to jump a vehicle and change a tire.

This book starts with the very basics. How awesome! This may be tiresome for some readers, but it really helped me to understand what an engine does and how all the parts actually worked together. It is Fundamentals, after all.

I have been supplementing the text with websites and actual questions and demonstrations from the men in my life, and I am getting a pretty good grip on things. Now I can check all my fluids, change my own oil and filter, and know how to bleed the brakes. My 454 threw a rod, so we replaced it with a 350, and I learned about automatic vs manual transmissions, and engine 'anatomy.' This book helped my feel not quite so much like a dummkopf in the garage!

A great read for anyone who wants to learn about cars!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I started this book not knowing much about cars and ended with a vast amount of knowledge. The book goes through basically every system under the hood of a car. It starts of extremely basic and works upwards in complexity as the book and chapters progress.

Before reading this book it would be helpful to have the following:
1. Knowledge of Physics, most importantly electricity and magnitism. There are a number of different applications inside a car that make use of solenoids, magnetic fields, inductance, AC/DC current, and many more concepts in this field. Knowledge and understanding of circuit diagrams also would help into understanding how things work.

2. Principles of hydraulic systems.

Thats basically it, being a Physics student I had these at my disposal so it wasn't too bad for me. The book DOES have explanations of all of these concepts, but it still would make understanding easier if you had the knowledge prior.

Here are the pros and cons of this book:

PROS:
-Starts concepts off in a very basic manner but progresses into complexity. This helps satisfy people who may just be learning, and people who want to know the hardcore details of things.

-VERY informative. There is so much information in this book that it is pretty much assured you will finish with a thorough understanding of the way cars work and run. It will most definitely help you diagnose complicated problems that you might be having with your car.

-The end of each chapter provides questions and key words that are essential for understanding.

CONS:
-Many times in this book, it will refer to a system in a car that it has not yet been defined. For example, it may reference the differential in a suspension system, yet it has not said what a differential is. It would probably help (it did for me at least) to know a SMALL amount of information about each system in the car before you read this book. Articles on "ehow.com" are excellent in providing a good amount of information in a short concise article.

-There are no answers to the questions at the end of each chapter. I guess there is a teachers edition or something out there, but the book I had had no answers for the questions. Which means you really do not know if you are right or not when you answer the questions.

-The information on Anti-Lock breaks was extremely lacking. I found it strange that every other chapter of the book went into great detail except for on Anti-Lock breaks.

Thats really all there is to say. I fully enjoyed this book. It has an incredible amount of information and you will definitely finish with an extensive knowledge about cars. VERY VERY please with this purchase! :D

Great first text

I teach and intro to auto technology class to liberal arts college students. I tried a few different books including the "Auto Repair for Dummies." That one was, well, for dummies. I mean, genuine, honest-to-goodness dummies. This is a book that explains the important concepts in a way that a non-technical person can understand. If you want to understand the basics of what is happening inside your car, this book is a great place to start. The illustrations are well-done, the information is presented in a logical manner and it is relatively up-to-date.

About the Author

Casey Reas is a professor in the Department of Design Media Arts at UCLA and a graduate of the MIT Media Laboratory. Reas' software has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries in the United States, Europe, and Asia. With Ben Fry, he co-founded Processing in 2001. He is the co-author of Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists (2007) and Form+Code in Design, Art, and Architecture (2010). His work is archived at http://www.reas.comwww.reas.com.

Ben Fry has a doctorate from the MIT Media Laboratory and was the 2006-2007 Nierenberg Chair of Design for the Carnegie Mellon School of Design. He worked with Casey Reas to develop Processing, which won a Golden Nica from the Prix Ars Electronica in 2005. Ben's work has received a New Media Fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation, and been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, Ars Electronica, the 2002 Whitney Biennial, and the 2003 Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.

Must have for cool arduino projects!
I have some experience with c++ and arduino. I'm not an advanced programmer by any means but this book was easy to read and understand. It got right into putting things on the screen and playing around! It is great for making graphics to represent arduino serial data and interfaces.

A perfect starting point for easily creating interactive graphics with the open source Processing application...

In general, programming seems to have become harder, not easier, over the years for beginners. Exceptions obviously exist, but the knowledge now required to program (key word "program," not "create" via a WYSIWYG) a website from the ground up and publish it to the web now greatly exceeds the general capacity of many people. The same applies to graphics. Those who remember the halcyon days of BASIC will also remember how relatively easy it seemed to make simple graphics and sounds that made programming feel immediately satisfying. Based on this instantaneous feedback, it inspired many people to learn more. That experience takes longer - and for good reason since technology has become more complicated in general - with today's more complicated languages such as C# or Java, not to mention C++. Those wanting to dive into programming may find themselves quickly drowning in principles, tools, concepts and a host of prerequisites before a pixel even appears on the screen. People looking for a road into programming, or those who simply want to create interactive graphics without completing a Computer Science degree, thankfully have some new options. The deceptively simple, but in many ways actually simple, open source program called "Processing" will fulfill this need for many who want to create graphics without ingesting a 500 page programming tome. Learning is still required, of course, but the path from beginner to interesting graphics is a shorter one.

The founders of Processing have created an extremely easy tutorial in book form appropriately called "Getting Stated with Processing." Now in its second edition, they state their purpose and mission in the book's first sentence: "We created Processing to make programming interactive graphics easier." They largely succeeded. As one progresses through this small 200 page book littered with code examples, screen shots, and diagrams, many may find themselves gasping aloud at just how effortlessly some really beautiful graphics appear. Even the very first example only 9 pages in, which creates a program that draws trailing circles from mouse movements, looks astonishing at first sight. The code for this example runs only some 15 lines or less. And it looks impressive despite its simplicity. This should catapult anyone interested in simple graphics processing through the rest of the book. Even better, the examples just get more and more incredible.

Starting with the absolute basics of drawing shapes on the screen, the book also covers many aspects of interactivity. After describing how to download and install Processing, also a very easy and free task, the book jumps into making shapes with colors, borders, varying thicknesses and transparencies. It even includes a handy discussion on Trigonometric functions for creating arcs (mathematics degree not required). Programming concepts such as variables, loops, mouse and keyboard input overlay the discussion on graphics creation. Everything appears at an easy going pace that any beginner will appreciate. To reinforce concepts, the end of each chapter includes a more sophisticated example using a bulbous-headed robot. Anyone who reaches the book's half way point will possess enough knowledge to make graphics crawl, walk or soar across the screen.

Subsequent chapters keep expanding Processing's abilities, such as using image or media files, displaying text, motion and tweening, randomness, breaking out programs into easier to manage functions, objects, arrays, processing and displaying data sets through delimited files or JSON and countless other possibilities. One particularly astounding example begins with loading a comma delimited file containing the latitude and longitude of 29,740 American cities into Processing. Using the map() function these data points get translated into pixels that display on the screen in the shape of the continental United States. Not only that, it incorporates mouse movements to allow scanning the map horizontally. A final chapter introduces the concept of importing external libraries. Processing version 3 has made this even easier. Here, some samples import the sound library to play sounds from .wav files, to create sine waves or process microphone inputs. One example alters a sine wave frequency based on mouse position. It may drive your family or your pets crazy, but it adequately demonstrates Processing's capabilities. The book ends with a brief discussion of integrating Processing with the popular Arduino microprocessor. It assumes some basic Arduino working knowledge. The sample code reads data from the Ardiuno serial port and makes its way into Processing, where it transforms into sometimes stunning graphics. This really shows what Processing can do and also suggests uses in the expanding realm of the Internet of Things.

"Getting Started with Processing" will get anyone off the ground with this free, easy to use and highly enjoyable program. This small book obviously can't cover everything, but it provides a launching point for the creation of more complex, integrated and highly interactive graphics. About the Author

Jerry H. Bentley was professor of history at the University of Hawai‘i and editor of the

Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of

Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament

Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance

Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research was concentrated on global history

and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters:

Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines

processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet

Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996)

discusses the historiography of world history. His most recent publication is The Oxford

Handbook of World History (Oxford, 2011), and he served as a member of the editorial team

preparing the forthcoming Cambridge History of the World. Jerry Bentley passed away in

July 2012.

Heather E. Streets-Salter is department chair and director of world history programs at Northeastern University. She is the author of Marital Races: The Military, Martial Races, and Masculinity in British Imperial Culture, 1857-1914 (2004), Empires and Colonies in the Modern World: A Global Perspective (2015) with Trevor Getz, and Southeast Asia and the Frist World War (forthcoming 2016). Her current research focuses on communist and anti-communist networks in interwar East and Southeast Asia.

Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught world history since 1980 and currently serves as director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. He also serves as book review editor of the Journal of World History. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy(1990). He is at present working on a study that explores from a global point of view the demographic trends of the past ten thousand years, along with their concomitant technological, economic, and social developments. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

Amazing text, amazing deal!

This book contains BOTH volume 1 and 2 for $80. This was the primary concern I had when ordering it, but I am glad I did. As a matter of fact, I bought volume 2 for $74 and decided to return that because this is a much better value.

The way this book is written is wonderful. The passages are long enough to enjoy but short enough to prevent the content from becoming stale.

If you need either volume for your class or you are just a history fan, BUY THIS BOOK!

Once again, THIS CONTAINS BOTH VOLUMES OF THE BOOK.

About the Author

Robert van Gulik (1910–67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. His many works include sixteen Judge Dee mysteries, a study of the gibbon in China, and two books on the Chinese lute.

Compelling stories of deduction

Van Gulik's Judge Dee series are fairly unique for the unfamiliar settings and historical Chinese literature his plots are based on. Like the previous books, the good judge is again called to investigate several mysterious cases (all at once), the most interesting being the murder of a retired general in a room locked from the inside.
While the cleverly-woven plots and investigations are the high point of all the books in the series, the wonderful little details of people and life in ancient China are a learning experience as well. The accuracy of these details comes as no surprise as the author was once the Dutch ambassador to China. Highly recommended for fans of classic stories of deduction.

Everything about this book is just perfect

This is much more than a most exciting detective story with different complicated crimes being brilliantly solved. It is also a fascinating glance at the ancient China - a guided tour into the Oriental way of thinking. Written with amazing credibility and expertise, the Judge Dee stories (especially this novel and "The Chinese Bell Murders") are perfectly suited for people with little pre-knowledge who want to learn to understand the Chinese.
I can't find a single flaw about this book. It's plain brilliant.

Brilliant!

For the uninitiated, Robert van Gulik's Judge Dee mysteries are absolutely brilliant. Van Gulik's Judge Dee (based on a historical character) finds himself involved in murders, barbarian plots, and a plan to overthrow the state in The Chinese Maze Murders. The settings are historically as accurate as can be, since van Gulik was one of the leading experts on China and an expert on Asian affairs, due to his service in the Dutch Foreign Service. All of the Judge Dee mysteries show a great deal of sophistication and detail which is often lacking in the genre.
For those readers who shy away from mysteries because they seem contrived, get this (and The Chinese Bell Murders) and be transported to another time and place. I don't care for mysteries myself, but the history and exotic locales penned by van Gulik made me a fan!
