Emotions are as old as humankind. But what do we know about them and what importance do we assign to them? Emotional Lexicons is the first cultural history of terms of emotion found in German, French, and English language encyclopaedias since the late seventeenth century. Insofar as these reference works formulated normative concepts, they documented shifts in the way the educated middle classes were taught to conceptualise emotion by a literary medium targeted specifically to them. As well as providing a record of changing language use (and the surrounding debates), many encyclopaedia articles went further than simply providing basic knowledge; they also presented a moral vision to their readers and guidelines for behaviour. Implicitly or explicitly, they participated in fundamental discussions on human nature: Are emotions in the mind or in the body? Can we "read" another person's feelings in their face? Do animals have feelings? Are men less emotional than women? Are there differences between the emotions of children and adults? Can emotions be "civilised"? Can they make us sick? Do groups feel together? Do our emotions connect us with others or create distance? The answers to these questions are historically contingent, showing that emotional knowledge was and still is closely linked to the social, cultural, and political structures of modern societies.

Emotional Lexicons analyses European discourses in science, as well as in broader society, about affects, passions, sentiments, and emotions. It does not presume to refine our understanding of what emotions actually are, but rather to present the spectrum of knowledge about emotion embodied in concepts whose meanings shift through time, in order to enrich our own concept of emotion and to lend nuances to the interdisciplinary conversation about them.

About the Author

Ute Frevert is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society. From 2003 to 2007 she was professor of German history at Yale University and previously taught History at the Universities of Konstanz, Bielefeld, and the Free University in Berlin. Her research interests include the social and cultural history of the modern period, the history of emotions, gender history, and political history. Some of her best known work has examined the history of women and gender relations in modern Germany, social and medical politics in the nineteenth century, and the impact of military conscription from 1814 to the present day. Ute Frevert is an honorary professor at the Free University in Berlin and member of several scientific advisory boards. In 1998 she was awarded the prestigious Leibniz Prize.

the hard reality of his life

This book is amazing it really thought me all the hard work you have to go through to get to the nba and that just because you don't get excepted to a big school doesn't mean you can't follow your dreams.
Even though I'm a Los Angeles Lakers fan, I decided to read “Stephen Curry: The Fascinating Story of A Basketball Superstar - Stephen Curry - Best Shooter In Basketball History (The Unauthorized Biography)” because I had read Steve Peyton’s other work and enjoyed that. Needless to say, I really enjoyed this short read. The book covered a lot of neat things I did not know about Stephen such as the fact that he was not heavily recruited by any major Division 1 basketball team and that he is a devoted follower of Christ who not only displays his unselfishness on the basketball court but also off the court.
This is a well-written work that shares the incredible story of Stephen Curry's rise in the NBA. This is the best book for the sports man to take inspirations and to do something bigger in his life. The book can be morale boaster of the person who is suffering from bad patch. In this book the hard reality of his life and how he face all of them is wrote. I am a big fan of biographical books and this one didn't disappoint. Good work by the author

Interesting facts about this young guy's career.

A book that details the life of one of the greatest NBA players of all times. If you've been a fan of him or you're into sports and like the NBA then you'll find this biography a pleasant read, learning everything this guy has done and had to go through in his career to get to where he is now. I bought this book from a promotion and this great player's interesting facts combined with the tips it comes with it's a nice read.

This is a great book about Stephen Curry. This book tells you everything about Curry's life without missing out any details. It tells the complete story of the best point guard in the NBA. Basketball is one of the most popular sports game and not hesitate to buy this book in a promotion. It is easy to make reference to great men of the basket as Jordan Michael and Charles Barkley but gives nostalgic for people like me who were born in the 90's did not see play with the same intensity to those stars who only wanted to make his record and still not were legends . In the world of basketball, Stephen Curry is definitely one of the best famous basketball players of all time. This book contains a lot of information about Stephen Curry. From the very beginning of his career from being an underdog to being NBA's best player.
Overall, i highly recommended this book.

Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, 2e investigates memory on multiple levels of analysis- looking at brain regions, systems that modulate memory, and how empirical findings can help answer real world issues. Covering recent research on humans, monkeys, and rats, the book discusses how different systems interact and influence each other, and the tools and techniques by which we can study the neurobiological aspects of learning and memory.

Divided into three sections, section one includes developmental and genetic contributions to memory, including the role of specific genes toward learning, memory formation, memory storage and retrieval. Additional coverage includes plasticity, the electrophysiology of cellular changes, the role of place cells in the hippocampus and interconnected neural circuits, the use of computational models to understand memory processes, and the influence of hormonal processes on learning and memory. Section two discusses the contribution of neural systems in mediating learning and memory. These chapters cover several neural substrates, including the medial temporal lobe, the frontal lobes, amygdala, basal ganglia, and cerebellum. Multiple approaches and techniques aimed at studying these brain regions are presented including, neuroanatomy, electrophysiology, lesion, pharmacology, fMRI, behavior and cognitive analysis. Section three emphasizes the applications of empirical findings to real world issues. These chapters cover issues of reward and drugs of abuse, the effects of aging on memory, the ability to enhance memory, and the importance of studying neurodegenerative diseases from both the molecular and treatment approaches.

About the Author
Raymond Kesner is currently a Full Professor at the University of Utah where he has been a faculty member for 40 years. His major research interests are in the theoretical and applied aspects associated with the neurobiological basis of learning and memory in both animals and humans. He has also concentrated on the development of animal models paralleling mnemonic symptomatology in brain damaged patients.

Joe L. Martinez, Jr. is a Ewing Halsell Distinguished Chair at the University of Texas, San Antonio. His research focusses on the memory and the hippocampus with special attention to the opioid containing mossy fiver-CA3 projection. His recent work had identified important genes that are upregulated in the hippocampus following learning.

A Flawless Biography of a Unique American

What can you say about a shy, slender, half-blind woman, about five feet in height, who slept on the open prairie, lived with Indians on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation, interviewed the likes of Black Elk, He Dog, Short Bull, Red Feather and others who personally knew Crazy Horse, who had already struggled for years as a writer before penning the ultimate biography of America's first authentic hero? From page one of "Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas" there is a sense that something spectacular is being recorded for posterity, never again to be witnessed by a living being. We are fortunate that Mari Sandoz lived during a time when the legend of Crazy Horse was still able to be told by those who knew and lived with him, but even more fortunate is that this amazing biography was written by an artist of the highest order. The story of the great Lakota warrior who refused to let his heritage be destroyed by the white man, will make you weep and wish you could have ridden with him on that open prairie.

Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas

In his foreword to the 50th anniversary edition, Stephen Oates, himself an historian and biographer of note, describes how Sandoz came to write the life of Crazy Horse and states,"Mari Sandoz and Crazy Horse may be the most potent pairing of author and subject in the history of modern biography." He praises Sandoz for writing "with a creative and lyrical brilliance that makes Crazy Horse a tour de force of language and style" and calls the book "...an almost perfect work of biographical art." I could not agree more with Oates. I have read the entire book two times and portions of it many more times.
Readers are often faced with the dilemma of deciding to read further after the first few chapters of a book in the hope they'll "get into it" or to close it and turn it into a dust-catcher. Not so with Sandoz's Crazy Horse. The reader is immediately drawn into it. I was hooked by the lyricism of the first few words of the book which told me that this was going to be no ordinary biography. They read as follows: "The drowsy heat of middle August lay heavy as a furred robe on the upper country of the Shell River, the North Platte of the white man. Almost every noon the thunders built themselves a dark cloud to ride the far crown of Laramie Peak. But down along the river no rain came to lay the dust of the emigrant road, and no cloud shaded the gleaming 'dobe walls and bastions of Fort Laramie, the soldier town that was only a little island of whites in a great sea of Indian country two thousand miles wide."
This story is told, not in the voice of a distant historian, but in the voice of an eyewitness. The vividness of her narrative would convince you, if you did not know otherwise, that Sandoz walked with Crazy Horse and his people. But even though she did not walk with them, she knew them well.
This is an extraordinary work of creative nonfiction that makes you love being a reader.

A Novel or Biography?

The strange man of the Lakotas made very little contact with the "white man" and remains a mysterious character of native American culture. Not much is known about him, his birth, his death, his burial.

Sandoz attempts to document as much history is known about this man, and she puts it in the form of a novel. It is easy to read and entertaining. Yet it includes historical facts, events and characters. While it is difficult to pen a biography about someone who so little is known about, Sandoz documents all that is known about him in this book. Many of the facts were taken from interviews with people who knew him and lived with him. Those people are all long gone. The only comprehensive memory of Crazy Horse is this book.
