Excellent How-To resource

Good interviewing skills are essential for freelance writers. Ken Metzler's book, Creative Interviewing: The Writer's Guide to Gathering Information by Asking Questions, is an excellent source for learning how to conduct an interview and improving your interviewing techniques.

Did you know that most interviews happen in ten stages? Mr. Metzler explains, "Face-to-Face interviews usually, though not always, run through ten stages. Four stages occur before you even meet your respondent. The success of the six subsequent ones depends largely on how well you accomplish the first four."

Do you know what the ten interview stages are? Here's the list from Creating Interviewing:

Required reading for serious journalism students

This book shows you how to conduct just about every type of interview. It also explains concepts, helps the journalist devise a plan and more importantly provides key information on how to cope with the "difficult interview." In my opinion, "The Writer's Guide to Gathering Information by Asking Questions: Creatinve Interviewing," by Ken Metzler should be required reading for serious journalism students everywhere.
"The need for interviewing skills is by no means confined to newspaper writers," according to the author. And I agree. The corporate world is always interviewing...they are always on the look for new talent. In many cases, they need to be better than simply ask, "where do you want to be in five years."
Believe or not there truly are many typical errors you want to avoid when interviewing. To this end, you will find a healthy discussion on how to avoid mistakes here. Moreover, this book will help you navigate the tricky interview process. Chapters two and three are terrific. Chapter two outlines the ten stages of the interview. And chapter three covers the conversational dynamics of interviewing. This book even includes a chapter on interviewing excercises.
All in all this book is a valuable tool for everyone interested in making journalism a profession. The gathering of information in journalism is primarily done by oral means. A very fine endgame book

Actually, I'd have normally given this book four stars, but my purpose is to counterbalance the review below. As he stated, Shereshevsky (the real author -- Mr. Neat was the translator) organizes the endgames by themes, but in a very instructive way: The progression from the apparently simple to the truly complex leads the student along in a way that is most productive. Unlike some tomes like Basic Chess Endings, this book is meant to be studied, not used as a reference. The fact that one can actually sense that he is making progress makes this a truly unique book. Jeremy Silman called it one of the three best engame books for the aspiring player (along with Soltis' most recent book on endings -- also excellent, and a book by James Howell that I have not yet seen). Silman thinks a thorough read of these three books could give the average Joe a 2400 player's understanding of the endings. Shereshevsky is more than an editor here -- he is a teacher, and a good one at that.

Long term planning in strategical endgames.

Some book reviewer said that if you have trouble purchasing this book you should beg for it. I agree with him one hundred percent.I have never seen an end game book with a chapter about not hurrying in the endgame.An example would be that repeating moves in many positions is fine,because most people have a tendency of breaking the repetition. In many instances that will make their position worse.He also talks about preventing counter play in the endgame which is closely linked to the concept of not hurrying.In addition problems involving whether or not to exchange pieces and how and what to exchange are clearly covered.Shereshevsky also talks about the importance of the economy of pawn play.Topics such as alternating maneuvers against two weaknesses along with king centralization are also discussed along with many other endgame topics of great importance.This book can definitely improve one's endgame exponently. A must read.

Shereshevsky shows how endgames are really played

Okay, so most of your games won't reduce to the most "basic" endgames (rook and pawn vs. rook, etc.). Very often, you reach an endgame where the play seems "middlegame-like" but with less pieces--positions not covered in your standard endgame primers.

Shereshevsky has taken a large number of examples (a majority of them "classic") and categorized them by METHODS OF PLAY, not by material. He explains the famous "Principle of Two Weaknesses" very well, and shows how to use this vaunted idea through many examples.

The emphasis in this book is on how to choose a plan, how to think, and how to play in a real game. I love the chapter "Do Not Hurry" and also "The struggle for the initative" in terms of how they help you to think. "Schematic thinking" was a bit challenging for me; I guess I need more practice with fantasy. Shereshevsky also brings up the concept of fortresses often.

"The two bishops" and the practical considerations present in "The 3-2 Queenside pawn majority" (control of the open d-file is the most important factor!) are very valuable.

The other chapters, "The problem of exchanging," "The role of pawns in the endgame," "Centralization," etc. are also very good. Everybody will have their favorites, but taken together this book is essential for advanced players.

When you have gone through this book a couple of times, you will have acquired a large arsenal of playing techniques to bring success in a wide variety of practical positions. To the best of my knowledge, this is a unique work in chess literature. A lot of people nowadays seem to "audit" their chess books with Rybka, et al, but to do so in this case would be missing the point.

Highly, highly recommended!

About the Author
Malala Yousafzai, the educational campaigner from Swat Valley, Pakistan, came to public attention by writing for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban. Using the pen name Gul Makai, she often spoke about her family's fight for girls' education in her community.

In October 2012, Malala was targeted by the Taliban and shot in the head as she was returning from school on a bus. She miraculously survived and continues her campaign for education.

In recognition of her courage and advocacy, Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, becoming the youngest-ever recipient at just seventeen years of age. She was also honored with the National Youth Peace Prize in Pakistan in 2011 and the International Children's Peace Prize in 2013, and she was short-listed for Time magazine's Person of the Year.

Malala continues to champion universal access to education through the Malala Fund, a non-
profit organization investing in community-led programs and supporting education advocates around the world.

Educated at Oxford and Harvard, she is the author of five books and has won a number of awards, including Britain's Foreign Correspondent of the Year five times, as well as the Prix Bayeux-Calvados, Europe's most prestigious award for war correspondents. She currently works for the Sunday Times and lives in London and Portugal with her husband and son.

A Must Read For Tweens And Teens

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

A 5-STAR STORY WITH A 6-STAR HEROINE, BUT 2-STAR NARRATIVE WRITING; I RECOMMEND THE YOUNG ADULT VERSION INSTEAD

The story of Malala Yousafzai is remarkable in every way, and she is an amazing, courageous young lady. Her story is astounding; the circumstances that she was forced to live through, and her bravery and sense of purpose, brought world focus to the tragedies in her homeland. This reviewer recognizes the essential significance of the subject matter and the tremendous role model which Malala is, but the story itself was poorly written. In televised speeches, Malala is more compelling and has much more presence than this narrative provided her. The writing is extremely choppy, going backward and forward in time with confusing and unbalanced frequency. The narration is rambling throughout and repetitive in many places, It reads like a poorly edited young adult novel. Perhaps the desire to preserve Malala's recollections as closely as possible to her notes resulted in lack of editing? I read this book along with a team of teachers and four high school classes of students, and nearly everyone I worked with agreed that the story was outstanding, but the writing was so poor it made the book a difficult and frustrating read.

Ironically, the newer, young adult version of this book is far superior in terms of structure and style, and is therefore much smoother and more readable. The YA edition is called I AM MALALA: HOW ONE GIRL STOOD UP FOR EDUCATION AND CHANGED THE WORLD. In my opinion, this YA edition is superior to its adult counterpart, and I recommend it highly. The YA version is co-authored by Patricia McCormick, an accomplished and decorated YA novelist (and a National Book Award finalist) who has written compelling novels on a number of tragic and realistic topics which affect young adults in various parts of the world. Her influence in helping frame Malala's story in unmistakable and eliminates many of the pitfalls which the title being reviewed here was not able to avoid.

This (adult) edition of I AM MALALA is a 5-star story with a 6-star heroine, but 2-star narrative writing.

An amazing story from a remarkable young lady

I downloaded this book minutes after midnight on its first day, and 14 hrs later I have finished it cover to cover. I have been married to a Pakistani for 14 yrs, and have repeatedly asked my husband, "Why do the Pakistanis put up with this"...or that as situations have arisen over the yrs. The best answers I have gotten are the same mentioned in this book. Corruption & fear. It is so wonderful to see a father & his daughter take a stand for their right for something as simple as going to school that so many of us take for granted every day.
Although I have never been to any of the 'villages' I have visited Pakistan once & was a bit surprised by the conditions in one of the larger cities. The Swat valley does sound beautiful thanks to the wonderful mental pictures I got from the very vivid text. It really is ashame that this area is no longer available for tourist, be they Pakistani or international. I also accompanied an in-law to a doctor's while in Pakistan, and as a retired RN, I am really amazed that Malala survived this ordeal. I have little doubt that it definitely was not her time to die no matter what the Taliban tried. God....Allah....must have other plans and no man will change that.

Socrates: the precursor of client-centered therapy

Morris B. Kaplan has given us a remarkably lucid, relevant introduction to the Socratic method, and Benjamin Jowett a readable,approachable translation of the ancient dialogues of Socrates and some of his most famous partners in debate. All the dialogues demonstrate that the ones taking serious issue with Socrates were indeed the ones at the center of Socrates' responses and challenges.

At a much later time, Carl Rogers, an American practitioner of "client-centered" therapy, insisted on the same centrality of the persons seeking clarification and a way to move forward. Socrates had a profound respect for his accusers,even though in the end they turned against him. Likewise, persons "blaming" everyone else for their problems finally come to realize that it lies within themselves to solve their own problems and move forward. It is the responsibility of the counselor, or therapist, to assist in this process, not offer insights. Like Socrates, the modern-day psychotherapist claims "ignorance" -- meaning "I will not offer insight but only assist in your probing your own problems."

Actually Socrates would have challenged the great 17th century philosopher Rene Descartes, a forerunner to the 18th century Enlightenment in science and philosophy. The great Cartesian epithet, Cogito; Ergo sum (I think, therefore I am) was unwittingly countered by the Socratic dictum, Dubito; Ergo sum (I doubt; therefore I am). Socrates was the first to give credibility to doubt. He believed that there is a truth,but doubted his own ability to attain, or realize, that truth in his own existence. In trying to destroy prejudices in himself, he regarded himself as ignorant. He was -- boldly so -- aware of his own ignorance. That constituted a dramatically shrewd weapon against his enemies. That is probably why Socrates remains a model for the legal profession.

In our time, Socrates is a corrective model for those who think they have all the answers.

Laws of Success and Reduced Stress

This book is a guide on how to accept fate and let go of events and people in our lives that we don't have any control over. Chopra says after we've done our best to prepare for success, let go of the final outcome. If our plans don't work the way we want, let it go. The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

Object -referral we are constantly seeking the approval of others. Our thinking and our behavior are always in anticipation of a response. It is therefore fear-based. In object-referral we also feel an intense need to control things.

When we experience the power of the self, there is an absence of fear; there is no compulsion to control, and no struggle for approval or external power.

Through silence, through meditation, and through non-judgment, you will access the first law, the Law of Pure Potentiality. Once you start doing that, you can add a fourth component to this practice, and that is regularly spending time in direct communion with nature. You can start with; I won't judge anything, for the next hour, I will experience non-judgment. Then you can extend it gradually.

The true essence is beyond the ego. It is fearless: it is free: it is immune to criticism; it does not fear any challenge. It is beneath no one, superior to no one.

When you are grounded in the knowledge of your true Self; when you really understand your true nature; you will never feel guilty, fearful or insecure about money, or affluence, or fulfilling your desires, because you will realize that the essence of all material wealth is life energy, it is pure potentiality.

The more you give, the more you will receive. If, through the act of giving, you feel you have lost something, then the gift is not truly given and will not cause increase. If you give grudgingly, there is no energy behind that giving.

It is the intention behind your giving and receiving that is the most important thing. The intention should always be to create happiness for the giver and receiver, because happiness is life-sustaining and therefore generates increase. The return is directly proportional to the giving when it is unconditional and from the heart.

Practicing the Law of Giving is actually very simple: if you want joy, give joy to others; if you want love, learn to give love; if you want attention. Learn to give attention etc....

The heart is intuitive; it's holistic, it's contextual, it's relational. It doesn't have a win-lose orientation. It taps into the cosmic computer; the field of pure potentiality, pure knowledge, and infinite organizing power; and takes everything into account. At times it may not even seem rational, but the heart has a computing ability that is far more accurate and far more precise than anything within the limits of rational thought.

You must first become consciously aware that your future is generated by the choices you are making in every moment of your life.

When you feel frustrated or upset by a person or a situation, remember that you are not reacting to the person or the situation, but to your feelings about the person or the situation. These are your feelings, and your feelings are not someone else's fault.

All problems contain the seeds of opportunity and this awareness allows you to take the moment and transform it to a better situation or thing.

Any time you encounter resistance, recognize that if you force the situation, the resistance will once increase. You don't want to stand rigid like a tall oak that cracks and collapses in the storm. Instead you want to be flexible, like a reed that bends with the storm and survives.

Attention energizes, and intention transforms. Whatever you put your attention on will grow stronger in your life. Whatever you take your attention away from will wither, disintegrate, and disappear. Intention, on the other hand, triggers transformation of energy and information. Intention organizes its own fulfillment.

Intention is the real power behind desire. Intent alone is very powerful, because intent is desire without attachment to the outcome. Desire alone is weak, because desire in most people is attention with attachment.

The past, present, and future are all properties of consciousness. The past is recollection, memory; the future is anticipation; the present is awareness. Therefore time is the movement of thought. Both past and future are born in the imagination; only the present, which is awareness, is real eternal.

If you have life-centered, present-moment awareness, then the imaginary obstacles; which are more then ninety percent of perceived obstacles; disintegrate and disappear. The remaining five to ten percent of perceived obstacles can be transmuted into opportunities through one-pointed intention.

One-pointed intention means holding your attention to the intended outcome with such unbending purpose that you absolutely refuse to allow obstacles to consume and dissipate the focused quality of your attention.

Learn to harness the power of intention, and you can create anything you desire.

Everyone has a purpose in life... a unique gift or special talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.

While meditation is the most useful way of entering the domain of spirit, simply shifting your internal dialogue to "How can I help?" will also access the spirit, that domain of your awareness where you experience your universality.

Ask yourself, if money was no concern and you had all the time and money in the world, what would you do? If you would still do what you currently do, then you are in dharma, because you have passion for what you do; you are expressing your unique talents.

Psychology of Creativity

This was by far one of the greatest books that I have ever read on psychology. It was funny, touching, sweet, but most of all thought provoking. As an aspiring artist, it helped me to comprehend myself a little better. The book is a compilation of essays, interviews, and writings by different creative individuals. From the flamboyant Maya Angenlou to the brilliant Federico Fellini. Probably the most moving and amusing segment of the book was the segment written by Frank Zappa, who explains creativity in a way that no other could. Sure genius.

I Adored it! You Will Too!!!

This particular book is one of a series entitled The New Consciousness Reader edited/authored by reputable experts in the fields of healing, spiritual growth, personal development and psychology.

This particular book is an absolutely compelling compilation of both original and classic writings by an assemblage of Creators writing about Creating - Awakening and Cultivating the Imaginative Mind. Frank Barron is professor emeritus of psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz and is known as a leading expert on the study of creativity. Dr. Montuori is associate professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. Anthea Barron lives in Santa Cruz. Sections of this work include The Uncovered Heart, The Opened Mind, The Web of Imagination, The Creative Ecology, The Dedication to Mastery, and The Courage to Go Naked. Authors and authorized pieces include 39 individual readings from the likes of Laurence Olivier, Frank Zappa, Igor Stavinsky, da Vinci, Tony Kushner, Maurice Sendak, Michael Focault, Carl Jung, Rainer Maria Rilke, Henry Miller, Annie Dillard and William Butler Yeats --- to name only a few. Each section contains an important orienting introduction written by Dr. Alfonso.
I adored the splendid variety contained in this volume. Admittedly, some of the names of the authors whose pieces were shared here, I have never heard of them before. It is the diversity of the insights, stories and thoughts that truly made me come back for more each day, until I had devoured the entire volume. I grew by reading this book. I'm certain you will too.

In the introduction, Frank Barrone writes: "creativity is a quest for meaning. It is an attempt to penetrate the mystery of the self, and perhaps the even greater mystery of Being. The very origin of existence is open to creative exploration, and the science of this century has posed new questions, large and small - intriguing , challenging, important questions." (p.2). The manner in which we humans live out our creative potential is aptly portrayed in the content of this volume - necessarily inhabited by novelists, musicians, composers, poets, dancers, physicists, scientists, playwrights and the like.

Creativity is a gift to the human species that can be developed - even taught, as Barrone says: "Creativity is a specifically human resource. It is part of the general human potential, something we can cultivate in ourselves if we set out to. It is also something that can be nurtured in others who are close to us and perhaps in our care. Teachers can help foster creativity in students, parents in children, and children in parents! It can work both ways, and it can be an important part of the mutuality that helps make all of us stronger." (p.5).

I truly adored all the diverse, nutritious insights in this book, only a small handful of which I have shared above. I recommend it.

Serendipity

I picked up this book idly and became interested in it. The selections are good. The creative mind is both full and empty. Serendipity means coming on an unexpected treasure. Cathy Johnson explains that her father had an unshakable need to wander.
Richard Feynman reports that teaching is an interruption, but that the questions of the students are often a source of new research. When Feynman felt burnt out at Cornell someone threw a plate in the cafeteria. He saw it wobble so he started to figure out the motion of a rotating plate. It was effortless. It was easy. It was like uncorking a bottle. His mind started to flow.
Kary Mullis, molecular biologist, notes that important inventions almost always cross disciplines. Mullis discovered the PCR, Polymerase chain reaction. It is widely used by molecular biologists. What is necessary for creative activity may be quite destructive of other kinds of activity. Yeats thought that rhythm prolongs contemplation. Annie Dillard sees herself as an explorer and also a stalker.
Italo Calvino relates that in devising a story the first thing that comes to mind is an image. In the acutal writing of the story, the words, the verbal aspect start to become more important. Imagination is a repertory of what is potential. The imagination is a kind of electronic machine. Michel Foucault suggests that utopias afford consolation although they have no real locality. Those who have creative power find the strength of mind to reject what is not true.
Mabel Dodge Luhan describes an experience with peyote where she had a momentary glimpse of life given by an expansion of consciousness. Creativity lives and dies within an ecology. Maya Angelou believes that black American art is rooted in music. N. Scott Momaday feels that southwestern landscape, turning up frequently in his writing, is more spiritual. He does not see any validity in separating man from the landscape. The oral tradition of the American Indian is intrinsically poetic. The Indian has the advantage of a very rich spiritual experience.
The creative process involves a tension between opposites. All the factors of creativity can be increased through training. The discipline and routine of creativity do not have to be boring. Stravinsky writes that all creation presupposes a sort of appetite. He believed that we have a duty towards music, namely to invent it. The faculty of creating is never given to us by itself.
