About the Author

Dr. Mark A. Wilson, Associate Professor of Psychology, NC State University, joined the faculty in 1992. He received a B.A. in Psychology from Wartburg College (1975), an M.A. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (1978), and a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Ohio State University (1983).

While completing the Ph.D., he served as Project Coordinator, Technical Director, and Senior Research Associate for Organizational Research and Development Inc. on a comprehensive human-resource research project involving human-resource planning, job analysis, selection (managerial assessment centers), performance appraisal, and compensation for a market- leading insurance company. The experience drastically altered his view of the field and his research interests. It was while working on the project that he developed his interest in the integration of human-resource systems, comprehensive job analysis, his dedication to the scientist-practitioner model and the problems of practitioners, and his love for fieldwork.

He has always been interested in work measurement issues, models of human job performance in organizations, and research methods. He has consulted and conducted research extensively with numerous large organizations in both the private and public sectors. He has taught graduate and undergraduate management courses as an Assistant Professor at both Texas Tech University (1981-1985) and Iowa State University of Science and Technology (1985-1992). In 1999, he was made an honorary member of the United States Army Special Forces. In 2006, he was appointed editor of Ergometrika (The Journal of Work Measurement Research).

Dr. Winston "Wink" Bennett, Jr. is a Senior Research Psychologist and Technical Advisor for continuous learning and performance assessment research with the Air Force Research Laboratory Human Effectiveness Directorate in Dayton Ohio. He is a Fellow of the Air Force Research Laboratory and is also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Wink and his team conduct and support core collaborative research programs and has garnered over $100M in outside funding investment. He and the team are actively involved in research related to performance evaluation, personnel assessment, training requirements identification, and quantifying the impact of organizational interventions - such as interactive, high fidelity immersive simulation environments and job redesign/restructuring and training systems impacts on individual, team, and organizational learning and effectiveness. Wink maintains an active presence in the international research community through his work on various professional committees and his contributions in professional journals and forums. He has published over 90 research articles, textbooks, chapters, and technical reports in the Human Factors, Aviation, Industrial and Organizational Psychology literatures. He serves as a contributing editor and/or as a reviewer for several professional journals. His involvement with the larger psychological research community ensures that communication amongst international military, industry and academic researchers remains consistent and of the highest quality.

Shanan Gwaltney Gibson (Ph.D., Virginia Tech) is an Associate Professor of Management at East Carolina University. Shanan’s research focuses on topics relevant to human resources and organizational development including work analysis, entrepreneurship and technology in organizations. She currently serves as a member of the Social Security Administration’s Occupational Information Development Advisory Panel. Active in several professional organizations such as the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, the Small Business Institute, and the Southeastern Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, Shanan is also an Associate Editor of the Small Business Institute� Journal. Shanan received her Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Virginia Tech.

George M. Alliger is Vice President of Solutions for the Group for Organizational Effectiveness, Incorporated (gOE). He received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Akron and holds a Masters in Clinical Psychology from Xavier University.

Dr. Alliger has conducted research and published extensively in the area of training, including issues of methods and analysis. His meta-analytic research into training evaluation led to a reexamination of the assumption of convergence among different training measures and won the first annual "Best Research Paper" award from the American Society for Training and Development. He has managed numerous job analyses, training evaluation, test development, and performance certification projects. For over a decade he taught training, evaluation, and statistics as Assistant and Associate Professor the State University of New York at Albany, where he is currently an adjunct faculty member.

Dr. Alliger helped develop the architecture for establishing Mission Essential Competencies (MECs) that has been widely adopted by the US Air Force and is now in use by the US Navy. Research from this program won the 2008 M. Scott Myers Award for Applied Research in the Workplace, presented by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Great Work Analysis Book!

This is a great book on work analysis/job analysis. It covers a range of topics related to work analysis with a variety of experts in the field contributing chapters. I think the introductory chapter is particularly great for those looking for a solid overview of the field of work analysis. I used this book in graduate school while studying I/O Psychology and found it very useful - I definitely recommend it to other I/Os interested in work analysis.

Excellent resource for all work analysis

After reading several chapters, I am finding this to be an excellent reference for identifying solutions for a wide variety of work analysis situations. This book integrates a wealth of ideas into a single resource and provides an appropriate balance of theoretical support and applied techniques. It presents techniques in sufficient detail for trained practitioners to be able to understand how to apply techniques without having to search for additional information, but also offers useful leads for further information when more details are needed. The job analysis community needed something such as this resource.

About the Author

Mark D. Hill is Professor and Romnes Fellow in the Computer Sciences and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research targets the memory systems of shared-memory multiprocessors and high-performance uniprocessors. Much of his recent work was part of the Wisconsin Wind Tunnel project, which examined supporting multiple parallel programming models on hardware ranging from tightly-coupled multiprocessors to clusters of workstations.

Norman P. Jouppi is Consulting Engineer at Compaq Computer Corporation’s Western Research Laboratory (WRL). Formerly a consulting associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, he has been a key contributor to the architecture and implementation of advanced graphics accelerators (including Neon), the MultiTitan and BIPS microprocessors at WRL, and the MIPS Stanford microprocessor.

Gurindar S. Sohi, a Professor in the Computer Sciences and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was awarded the 1999 ACM SIGARCH Maurice Wilkes award for contributions in the areas of high issue rate processors and instruction level parallelism. His research has focused on architectural and microarchitectural techniques for high-performance microprocessors.

Great book for students of the subject

This book is collection of seminal papers in computer architecture. Similar collections have been used for classes in my university; and I can easily say this is one of the best collections I've ever seen.
If you're a grad student,researcher, or practicing engineer on the area, this is a great book to keep nearby. It will save you from the hassle of going to the library and making copies of all the important papers.
On the other hand, this book is not of much use if you don't already possess advanced knowledge of computer architecture, i.e. it definitely is not a beginners' book. These people might want to take a look at Hennessy & Patterson's book for a very comprehensive, or at Tanenbaum's book for a simpler introduction to the field.
I strongly recommend this book.

Comprehensive, good selection

The editors did a great job selecting papers that give one a great overview of computer architecture. That is, they spared one the task of looking for paper selection themselves. Quality of writing and presentation varies across the papers - unfortunately, scientific writing tends to be weak in these areas, but one can hardly blame the editors.

Definitely not worth the 90$ price!

I felt ripped off by this book. I bought it because my then research advisor was recommending it for a course. I agree that this is a collection of seminal research papers in architecture. But, any research student with access to IEEE/ACM can easily get hold of these papers for free. Save 90$ by not buying this book, and instead take prints of the papers.

A Solid Mystery

If you're a Nancy Drew fan, this title is sure to please. Nancy, George, and Bess go to visit Aunt Eloise in New York, only to find themselves head over heels in mysteries. Whether it's missing gowns at a fashion show, a missing reporter brother, or a pair of impostors (hence the title), Nancy proves she is up for the task. Loose ends are wound up nicely and everything works out right in the end. A good mystery, especially for one so late in the series. Worth a buy.

We first meet Nathan and Vince in nuts about you and the humor (especially Nathan’s inner voice) made that delightful. In this sequel, that voice is sometimes missing and so while I truly enjoyed this, I missed that somewhat.
Nathan and Vince are established and in love. Vince didn’t bat an eye at Nathan turning furry and Nathan wants Vince all to himself. The problem is that Vince wants to meet Nathan’s friends and family, and well, that’s a disaster waiting to happen. But he wants to make his man happy, so maybe a slow introduction to some other shifters will ease him into it.
Now really – a werehummingbird. How can you ask for more than that? Charlie is Nathan’s friend, said werehummingbird and all around gossip. So when he sees Nathan with hunky Vince, the jig is up and any hope of easing him in is over. For his part, Vince is very laid back about the whole thing.
It is when faced with a jerk of a weremoose, Jude, that things come to a head and Nathan gets to show just how Alpha he can be. He still makes me laugh, particularly in his fighting style. There’s a good lesson here about underestimating someone just because they are small. Keep your nuts hidden around Alpha squirrels. Cute, fluffy and fun.

Sweet And Nutty!!

This is such an adorable series. It has me smiling and laughing throughout the whole story. Nathan is an aloha squirrel shifter, and Vince is his human boyfriend. Vince is loving and very patient with all of Nathan's people when they go camping together and all chaos breaks loose. There were wereredpandas, and a weremoose, and Nathan's best friend is a werehummingbird!!!! There were even weregoats. All of them hanging out at Nathan and Vince's camp sight. I was beginning bbto think that they would never have time alone together. I was laughing out loud :) when Nathan fought the moose in defense of his lover. He was a little ninja squirrel and it was so cute!!!! This was written very well since I could clearly imagine everything that was going on in that camp sight. I do love this series along with both Nathan and Vince. They're loving and affectionate towards each other and they're good at talking out their issues, and I must say, that poor grumpy moose. Oh well, once you bite moose, you never let loose. :)

About the Author
William Leonard Pickard is a graduate of the Kennedy School of Goverment at Harvard, with degrees in chemistry and public policy. He was formerly a research associate in neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, a Fellow of the Interfaculty Initiative on Drugs and Addictions at Harvard, and Deputy Director of the Drug Policy Analysis Program at UCLA. His interests include Victorian literature, deincarceration technologies, the neuropolicy of cognitive enhancement, and the future of novel drugs. He encourages correspondence from the thoughtful reader.

Review of William Leonard Pickard’s ‘The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets and Sacraments’

Upon reading and re-reading ‘The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets and Sacraments’, I feel compelled to offer a sufficient review of this magical mountain of 21st Century writing. The publishing of this work signifies perhaps the first psychedelic literature which, years from now, will be referred to as “classic.”

It’s no secret that for the past few decades the world has been mired in a sort of widespread creative funk with little to no truly original offerings emanating forth from anywhere. All this has changed with the release of William Leonard Pickard’s ‘The Rose’. Signaling a new phase in the ever-evolving mandala of the world of books, a new planet of sorts has been created, one which will grow by accretion with each updated version.

The reader is really an explorer in a strange new realm, as it unfolds and expands to a beautiful and tragic immensity. Pursued by something vaguely sinister on the periphery, our narrator crosses landscapes which become mythic in the unfolding psychedelic origami, as he vividly captures fragile humanity with his whole-earth perspective.

TROP is a joy to read. Mystical & lovely, magical and curiously medieval, ‘The Rose of Paracelsus’ takes the reader on a journey to the fascinating realms of “The Six,” an elite international group of six chemists who are devoted to actively driving cognitive evolution of the human species by synthesizing and distributing “planetary-scale batches” of psychedelics. Along with our humble narrator, we travel heady realms of cognitive enhancement less traveled by ordinary humans as TROP exudes a powerful unrelenting emotional impact.

I’m amazed by the versatility of TROP, it’s unwillingness to be easily defined. This book touches on so many different themes and genres. It’s a thrilling adventure, drug journal of espionage, extraordinary epic, Shakespearean tragedy, it even gets science-fiction-ish and downright spooky at some points and more.

This 656-page blueprint for a better human and grand-scale examination of the human condition written with an unrestrained elegance, combined with the originality of the concept, is evidence that there is really no comparable contemporary equivalent to this text. It can only be described as a gift to history and humanity.

Realizing the full importance of this monumental work, both in terms of literary and historical value, will take the world several decades to acknowledge. As readers in the immediate do start unlocking for themselves the significant potential of this work in their minds, look out, cause ohhh-baby!

So, if you are a fan of masterful pacing, transportive detail and hearing of those who live in the realms of the ethereal, then ‘The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets and Sacraments’ is for you.
