For many readers, Forge “will be one of the best novels they have ever read” (starred review from Kirkus Reviews)!

Blistering winds. Bitter cold. And the hope of a new future. In this compelling sequel to Chains, a National Book Award Finalist and winner of the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction, acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson shifts perspective from Isabel to Curzon and brings to the page the tale of what it takes for runaway slaves to forge their own paths in a world of obstacles—and in the midst of the American Revolution.

The Patriot Army was shaped and strengthened by the desperate circumstances of the Valley Forge winter. This is where Curzon the boy becomes Curzon the young man. In addition to the hardships of soldiering, he lives with the fear of discovery, for he is an escaped slave passing for free. And then there is Isabel, who is also at Valley Forge—against her will. She and Curzon have to sort out the tangled threads of their friendship while figuring out what stands between the two of them and true freedom.

Gr 6-10–This sequel to Chains (S & S, 2008) opens with Curzon, an enslaved teen who was freed from prison by Isabel, recalling his escape and anticipating the future. After an argument with Isabel about where they should go next, the 15-year-old battles the British at Saratoga and winters in Valley Forge with the Patriots. He reveals many details of the conditions endured by the soldiers during the winter of 1777-1778, including the limited food supply, lack of adequate shelter, and tattered clothing. When Curzon and Isabel meet again, they have both been captured and must devise a plan of escape once again. While the Patriots are fighting for the freedom of a country, these young people must fight for their personal freedom. This sequel can be read alone but readers will benefit from reading the first book, which develops the characters and reveals events leading up to the winter at Valley Forge. An appendix clarifies historical facts and real-life characters. A list of colloquial terms used throughout the novel is appended.Denise Moore, O'Gorman Junior High School, Sioux Falls, SD

Anderson follows her searing, multi-award-winning novel Chains (2008) with this well-researched sequel, also set during the Revolutionary War and narrated by a young African American. This time, though, her central character is male, and the heartbreaking drama shifts from Chains’ domestic town houses to graphically described bloody battlefields. After a narrowly successful escape from Manhattan, former slaves Isabel and Curzon separate, and Curzon is once again on the run. He finds necessary food and shelter as a private with the Continental army, and through Curzon’s eyes, Anderson re-creates pivotal historical scenes, including the desperate conditions at Valley Forge. Curzon isn’t as fully realized here as Isabel was in Chains, resulting in a less-cohesive and -compelling whole. Once again, though, Anderson’s detailed story creates a cinematic sense of history while raising crucial questions about racism, the ethics of war, and the hypocrisies that underlie our country’s founding definitions of freedom. Chapter heads excerpted from historical documents and a long appendix that offers research suggestions and separates fact and fiction add further curricular appeal. Grades 5-8. --Gillian Engberg

At the end of Chains (2008), Isabel rescues her friend Curzon from Bridewell Prison and rows away from Manhattan in their escape from slavery. Now, in the second of the planned trilogy, Isabel goes her own way, and 15-year-old Curzon takes over as narrator. Passing as free, he joins the Continental Army at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78, where, against the most desperate of circumstances, he forges a friendship with fellow soldiers. When he is enslaved again and meets up with Isabel, he and she must once again take liberty into their own hands and find a way to escape. Weaving a huge amount of historical detail seamlessly into the story, Anderson creates a vivid setting, believable characters both good and despicable and a clear portrayal of the moral ambiguity of the Revolutionary age. Not only can this sequel stand alone, for many readers it will be one of the best novels they have ever read. A good match with Russell Freedman's Washington at Valley Forge (2008). - "KIRKUS, "September 1, 2010, *STAR

Second in the Seeds of America trilogy, this sequel to the National Book Award finalist Chains is narrated by Curzon, the slave Isabel freed from prison while escaping her own enslavement in 1777 New York City. Curzon immediately explains how he and Isabel lived in New Jersey for a few months, before she ran away with their meager funds in hopes of finding her sister, a quest Curzon refused to support. Months later, Curzon is doing his best to forget Isabel, though the depth of his feelings is made evident in flashbacks of their time together. After Curzon saves the life of Eben, a young rebel soldier, he joins the army and suffers through the winter at Valley Forge; tension mounts when Curzon's former owner arrives. Anderson includes meticulous details about the lives of soldiers and, with just a few words, brings readers deep inside Curzon's experience ("My belly voted louder than my wits"). Her masterful storytelling weaves themes of friendship, politics, love, and liberty into a deeply satisfying tale that will leave readers hungry for the final volume. - "PW, "September 13, 2010, *STAR

Forge

by Laurie Halse Anderson, *STAR

"Forge" is the sequel to "Chains" (2008), but it can be read independently. Anderson has done her research and accurately portrays the horrors of serving in the first Continental Army at Valley Forge. The story within is of slavery in a fledgling nation; the freedom that the founding fathers were fighting for did not extend to their slaves. The hero of the story, Curzon, has already served in the army, but in trying to get away from a cruel master, he is re-enlisted. When his former master reappears, his friends from his squad help him escape, along with Isabel, the heroine of "Chains". The book contains an appendix with glossary, further readings, and Q&A about the historical background and primary sources used. Each chapter begins with a quote pertaining to the war or slavery. While the details are accurate, the book is not gratuitously violent. Curzon is an empathetic character to whom most young people will relate. At the end, when Curzon and Isabel escape, the reader can only hope that all will end well in the next book. Laurie Halse Anderson has again written historical fiction at its finest.

About the BookRead an ExcerptAuthor Interview -- Month YYYY

When Laurie Halse Anderson's novel CHAINS was published in 2008, it became a finalist for the National Book Award and won the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. The book introduced young people to an important --- and often overlooked --- chapter in American history, as Anderson told the story of the dawn of the American Revolution through the eyes of a young slave girl.

Anderson now continues this work in FORGE, the second book of what will eventually be a trilogy. Here the narrative shifts gears from Isabel to her friend Curzon, a fellow runaway who becomes separated from Isabel but finds safety --- of a sort --- when he enlists as a soldier fighting on the American side during the Revolutionary War. As one of the few black soldiers, he is disrespected --- and worse --- by some of his peers and his officers. With his customary courage, hard work and loyalty, however, Curzon gains the respect and even the friendship of many of his fellow soldiers.

All the young men's fortitude is brutally tested, however, when they are told to report to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, during the winter of 1777 and 1778. As Curzon and his comrades struggle just to survive, Anderson vividly brings to life the horrifying details of life in Valley Forge, unflinchingly documenting the hardships that most high school history books just gloss over. From surviving days without food to digging trenches in frozen ground to trudging through snowdrifts in just a pair of wet, stinking socks, Curzon's story, and that of all the men, will both repulse readers and remind them of the soldiers' remarkable fortitude and bravery.

Besides being a compelling, unfailingly realistic account of the winter at Valley Forge, though, FORGE's story also serves as a powerful metaphor:

Curzon and Isabel, runaway slaves in Anderson's Chains (BCCB 11/08), have parted company--she is headed south to find her sister Ruth, and he finds work driving a cart for Patriot soldiers. An impulsive act of battlefield bravery leads to Curzon's enlistment as a freeman with the 16th Massachusetts Regiment, and he's now a tentmate with Eban Woodruff, the young man whose life he saved, and John Burns, a sly bigot who waits for an opportunity to drum Curzon out of the army. Personal animosity simmers as the soldiers encamp at Valley Forge for the winter of 1777-8, but Curzon and his comrades cooperate to make the best of dire circumstances. When Burns rises to the rank of sergeant, though, and Curzon's legal owner, James Bellingham, reclaims his service, Curzon begins to plot yet another escape. His situation is immediately complicated by the appearance of Isabel, who has been recaptured and sold to Bellingham. Bellingham knows Curzon will withhold his labor, so he threatens to punish Isabel, who already wears a locked metal cuff around her neck, for each infraction he may cause. Desperate but unable to plan a foolproof escape, Curzon and Isabel are blessed by chance and the unexpected aid of Curzon's old comrades at arms with some slim hope of freedom as the novel ends and they march out of Valley Forge, protectively surrounded by decamping troops. The saga that began as Isabel's tale loses none of its tension as it switches to Curzon's plight, and the pair's situation at the novel's conclusion is precarious enough to suggest--even demand--another volume. Again Anderson crafts her source notes into a reader-friendly Q&A discussion and appends a glossary of eighteenth-century terms. As one of Curzon's mates observes, "This camp is a forge for the army; it's testing our qualities. . . . Question is, what are we made of?" Fork

a terrific historical thriller
By M. Tanenbaum
If by some chance you missed Chains, you'll want to read it before delving into this sequel--the second volume of a planned trilogy. Chains, set at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, focuses on the story of Isabel, a 13-year old slave owned by a prominent New York City family who support the British. Isabel meets another slave, Curzon, with ties to the Patriots, and becomes a spy for the Patriot cause--with the hopes of obtaining her freedom.

In Forge, the story begins where Chains ends, with Isabel and Curzon escaping to freedom, but the focus of the story quickly changes from Isabel to Curzon. The two have separated again, with Isabel running away to try to find her sister and Curzon finding himself in the middle of the Battle of Saratoga, then enlisting in the Patriot army. The irony of a slave fighting for the freedom of others does not escape Curzon, who attempts to argue his case with his friend and fellow soldier Eben. Curzon questions whether bad laws deserve to be broken, but Eben is frustrated by Curzon's logic. "Two slaves running away from their rightful master," he says," is not the same as America wanting to be free of England. Not the same at all."

But when the army arrives at the winter encampment at Valley Forge, white and black soldiers alike are unprepared to deal with the conditions there: about 12,000 soldiers with no barracks, bitter cold, and no meat. The author begins each chapter with a quote from a contemporary source, many of which are increasingly desperate reports from General Washington to the Continental Congress on the need for supplies of all kinds, from food to shoes to clothing. Most days rations consisted of nothing but firecake, a mix of flour and water that tasted like ashes and dirt, and was "hard enough to break rat's teeth." Anderson so successfully evokes conditions at the camp that we groan along with the men at their terrible conditions. But the men manage to find a little humor in their situation..no food means "we've got nothing to fart with." A special treat for Christmas is a piece of chewy pigskin to chew on (I'm assuming like the pigs ears people buy now for our dogs).

Through all the hardship Curzon manages to keep secret that he is really an escaped slave, but he can't stop thinking about Isabel and what might have become of her. Fate is to bring them together again at Valley Forge. While General Washington and Baron von Steuben try to forge the raggedy American volunteers into real troops, Curzon and Isabel try to forge their way to a new relationship...are they more than friends or an ever-bickering brother-sister pair? And can they in turn forge their way to a life of freedom along with the Patriot army?

This book equals Chains in its ability to bring the complex world of Revolutionary America to life--a world in which some struggled for freedom while others were condemned to a life of slavery. What will happen to Curzon and Isabel? We won't know until the last volume in the trilogy comes out next year.

While the main characters in the story are fictional, Anderson integrates their story seamlessly around real-life figures such as Washington, Nathaniel Greene, Charles Wilson Peale, and others, and in an afterword explains clearly which characters are "real" and which are fictional, as well as additional historical explanations. For example, she explains how black Americans fought for both the Patriots and the British. The appendix also provides a wealth of suggestions for future reading.

But don't call her book historical fiction. The author believes historical fiction gets a bum rap from kids. Please, she begs teachers and librarians, in her blog, call her books "HISTORICAL THRILLERS." The phrase historical fiction, she says, makes kids bolt for the exit or writhe on the floor in agony because between Johnny Tremain and the excruciating boredom of history class, they think all things historical are worse than chewing on barbed wire." I think the "thriller" label is justified for Forge, as it is for Chains--I had a hard time putting the book down, and literally gasped with shock at times as I turned the pages. Put this in the hands of young readers, please, and kudos to Anderson for another page turning thriller (with some non-excruciating history thrown in).

Forging Connections in So Many Ways
By James Hiller
I fell in love with strong Isabel in Laurie Halse Anderson's first book, Chains. She is a compelling, original character that, although her status as a slave, didn't accept things as they were. Living in New York City, she befriends another boy in a prison named Curzon, who together escapes to a better life. The sequel, "Forge", picks up the story, with a shift in narrators, and tells an equally compelling story of American independence mixed with slavery.

Escapaing together, Isabel quickly ditches Curzon to find her only surviving family member, younger sister Ruth. Curzon quickly finds himself enveloped once again in the fight for liberty, enmeshing himself with a group of patriots, some more accepting of his skin color than others. Bad timing. The Continental army is spending a very cold winter at Valley Forge. Everyone fights off cold, near starvation, thievery and infighting, until a surprise twist whisks Curzon away into a new set of complications I honestly didn't see coming.

For those of you like myself that adore Isabel, and may have been put off with a change in narrators, I encourage you to not to give up hope. Anderson's book is definitely Curzon's story. It ends up being interesting to view Isabel through this lad's eyes. You get quite a different sense of her, which I truly appreciate. In some ways, Isabel becomes more alive this way, more rounded, more real.

It all comes down to Halse's writing style. Brisk, extremely well researched without dwelling in period details or language that would leave the reader lost, the story moves along at a great pace. Short chapters lend themselves to building tension and drama, and make it ideal for a read aloud. The kids will relate to Curzon right away; his reduced status, in the eyes of some, make him a smart, "cheer"-able underdog. While I didn't think this at first, it was a great move to have Curzon pick up this part of the story.

In all, this series of books is a brilliant twist on an all-too-familiar story. Having African-American characters participate in a battle for freedom, in which their own freedom is non-existent, speaks volumes to the unexplored in children's literature racial conflict that is a compelling paradox to our American Revolution. In Halse's deft and skilled writing hands, it ultimately is a winner of a book all around.

"It's testing our qualities. Instead of heat and hammer, our trials are cold and hunger. Question is, what are we made of?"

What indeed? Curzon finds himself asking this question and others when his past as a runaway slave starts to catch up with him. By all accounts, he should be freed; he has kept his part of a bargain that he made months earlier. But he doesn't have paperwork showing he's been freed, and if he's revealed as a runaway, hunger and cold will be the least of his problems. One beloved but complicated relationship from his past also resurfaces when he encounters Isabel once more and must deal not only with their shared and separate histories but also with his evolving feelings toward her.

Once again, in FORGE, Laurie Halse Anderson has managed to compose a historical novel that feels both entirely true to its period and completely contemporary. Curzon's voice rings true as that of an 18th-century young man, but its sophisticated narration and storytelling style introduce contemporary perspectives seamlessly in ways that will not only allow readers to reflect on their own times but also to reconsider their understanding of and approach to history. With its extensive historical notes and glossary, FORGE (like CHAINS) would be an ideal classroom companion to more traditional history-book fare, one that readers will likely relish as much for its sensitive storytelling as for its gutsy depictions.

Coming to Your Senses: Why You Can't Change & How to Change That, by Steve Korch

A new book about God's unique plan for changing our lives. This book speaks to one of the most important yet least understood priorities of the Christian life--change. Steve Korch addresses two big questions: (1) How does God bring about authentic change in the lives of His people? (2) What does authentic change really look like? This is not just another "how to" book with more burdensome lists of application steps. In fact, there are none. While recognizing the vital role of practical direction, this book goes behind the "how to's" and addresses the very thoughts and images that drive the reader's decisions. Through stories, contemporary issues and creative exposition of the Scriptures Steve explores a different way of thinking that results in a different way of living. For readers who seek to live as different people, the promise of this book is simple: authentic change is literally a matter of coming to our (spiritual) senses.

From the Inside Flap
"We all want to make progress, to grow and change. We want our lives to look differently today than they did last week and to light the darkness around us. But why is it so hard? Why is transformation so elusive? With characteristic insight and warmth, Steve pares away the external trappings of knowledge and morality and explores the inseparable link between the core truths we believe and the lives we actually live."Becky Kimball, Vintage Faith, Santa Cruz
"Steve does a masterful job explaining spiritual formation with ease, and with heart. He explains our spiritual growth in a way that we all can understand, apply, and start living out. I would recommend this book to anyone who truly longs to live the life Jesus intends for them to live!"Eric Parks, Red Rocks Church, Golden

From the Back Cover
"This book will be a source of hope and possibility for those who respond courageously to the summons of the author."Walter Brueggemann, author & theologian

"As I read Coming to Your Senses,I experienced a renewed hope; that the kind of radical, breath-taking change that Jesus offers really is possible for me. Instead of how-to's, I found a fresh way to think about change" Joe Bishop, Respero

"The stories of transformation shared in this book will not only awaken your own, but will make you ache for more . . . of your own." Bert Downs, Chancellor, Western Seminary

An important contribution on spiritual vitality
By Dr. Gary Tuck
The title captures our attention and captures the heartbeat of the book. It is about “senses.” And it is about how to break through to experience change for the better.

Professor and Pastor, Dr. Steve Korch directs our attention to the realm of the spiritual through such “senses” as wonder and presence and eternity, carefully keeping God at the center. He is not content with trivial or clich banter but exhibits sensitivity to life even at its most painful. “Why am I doing what I am doing? Does any of this really matter? What’s the point? … Do I matter? Am I enough? Does anyone really care?”

He writes with engaging flow and vivid images and lively connection points. Most importantly, his message is gripping and serious. This life is temporal and terminal; we must concentrate on the unseen and eternal. For, ready or not, it will soon overtake us. Yet this life is important: important enough that we must change and change in improving ways.

“The change God desires to produce in us is tied to a larger story.” Life is about the after-life. And the after-life hones our daily purpose, giving direction to intentional change. But it’s the Life-giver who gives the power for that change.

A Treasure Map
By PW
Sometimes a 'reviewer' wants to stop writing about a book and stand up and CHEER. . !

This book is a work of art.

Like the unfolding of a newly discovered treasure map, Steve Korch invites the reader to keenly inspect clues, step by step, together sleuthing out the answers which lead to identifying and ultimately experiencing authentic, permanent, whole-hearted, positive, genuine change.

Written with breathtaking transparency, genuine humility, humor (there are hidden treasures in the the body of work and in the 'footnotes' for the reader to discover), we are challenged to explore the ways in which what we believe determines how we live. . . and how we live reveals what we believe.

By looking at what's good and where we have gone astray, exploring assumptions and expectations, asking insightful, provocative, searching questions, a journey is begun--a journey that encourages and enables the reader to be reshaped by an entirely new way of thinking.

Clearly profound yet exuding the relaxedness of an over-a-cuppa-coffee-chat with a friend.

The reader cannot come away without having more fully 'come to one's senses' and begun a metamorphosis in perception, understanding
and--ultimately--living.

Changed to the core
By Dee
“I am convinced that a changed and changing life is at the core of the Gospel… I am also convinced that God Himself is the sole agent of that change.” Steve Korch

From the first pages to the last, this author has deftly woven the truth of our calling in Christ as about more than being changed into a new person, but a new kind of person – called not simply to a new life, but a new kind of life.

What I loved about the book, in a word - Transcendence - the forgotten factor of this new dimension in which and from which we are called to live.

Coming to Your Senses offers a clear path to the transcendent life available to every believer - an escape route from the good enough, mundane and disappointing to a reality perceivable only by our spiritual senses - formed by God’s Spirit within us and nurtured by what our hearts believe – God’s reality, and our (imperfect) significance in it. Loved it!!!

Fun & Sexy Romantic Suspense
By NReads
Tattoo My Heart was a fun & sexy romantic suspense by Mia Dymond. As always, Mia delivered a fun story filled with great characters and a good plot. I very much enjoyed reading about Annessa and Casey's relationship, past and present.

The characters, both main and secondary, were well-developed. Annessa was also a likeable character; she was strong yet her vulnerability shown through. And what to say about Casey? He was just sexy period. I loved his characterization and his protectiveness towards Annessa as well as his love for her. The sexual tension was thick between these two & once they got together, it was explosive!

Overall, I highly enjoyed this story by Mia Dymond. Therefore, I would highly recommend this for those looking for a good ol' romance with a pinch of suspense to get lost into. Also, I can't wait to read about Travis and Verity's story. Hope it's the next installment!

Slam Bam Thank You Ma'am
By Anita
Not bad, not good. Hot sexy guy. Good plot premise, but the pacing is off and the plot is not tight. At times I find myself returning to earlier paragraphs to read again, because I am questioning, "How did we get there?" "What just happened?" Several times this novel seems to be about to settle into itself, level off, but it never did. I ended the novel with a feeling of hmmmmm. Next.

YUMMY hero...OMG
By Gatorfan
OMG this hero is beyond YUMMMMMMMMMMY. He is the local Sheriff and he is definitely an "arrest me now" kind of hero. WOW... Even his firemen buddies are beyond words. All live in a small town and all friends. One buddy has twin sisters. They are the good twin and the bad twin. Bad in the sense that she just gets into and causes a lot of trouble. Just sort of a wild child.

She returns home in Georgia from California to be in her sister's wedding. That is what everyone believes. however, this time she is in serious trouble and she is not sure why...yes she witnessed a murder or rather the body after the murder but she really knows nothing beyond that. she is a wedding planner and she was running the wedding day events when she stumbled on the body and 3 guys standing over the body. Did not recognize any of them. And is not sure they even noticed her. however, the wedding was for the daughter of a big mob boss criminal, so anything is possible. she leaves town after receiving her payment for services from the father. It turns out to be a diamond bracelet, not the check she was expecting. She figured it was a thank-you for pulling off the happy event, puts it on and leaves town undercover of a false ID.

SPOILER ALERT---this heroine got on my nerves. #1-She leaves town and goes home to where her identical twin lives, knowing that if trouble follows it is not only her behind that can be in trouble but this never occurs to her.
#2 Once she receives threats, she is going to handle these guys on her own. Now the FBI, local and state police, etc. cannot nail them with anything and they kill for kicks but she, with pepper spray, is going to bring them all down. DUMB
#3 She has sex on the beach, not intercourse but everything else, but when they return to the house, she is going to show him who is in control and make him sleep on the couch. What is she? 13? Just a dumb thought.
#4 These two have been dancing around each other for 7 years, this time she has been home he has done everything but have intercourse, he didn't have protection! But does he go buy some? Nope, he just keeps dancing around her. Come on guy, you are losing me!~! One last thing, there is a HEA however, her last little stunt at the end of the book just takes the cake. You run after something for 20 years, catch it, then decide nope, not going to do this. Her reasoning was just stupid and immature. I didn't get it. This gal is a flake of the first order. Spoiled? I don't think I would have called it that. BRAT yep, I could go with that. I wish the Sheriff had just let her go!! Would have served her right.

This was a good story with lots of adventure and hot sex scenes. I get so put out with the heroine and her dumb, immature thoughts that I am having a hard time getting beyond them. Then I think about that yummy law official and want to give it 5 stars on him alone. I would recommend the book, I'm sure others will find her behavior ok, so I would suggest you read and decide for yourself. it certainly is NOT a waste of time.

PREFACE

IT’S OPENING NIGHT, the first show of my first ever world tour.

This was the first time we’d be doing the full show that we had been planning and working on for more than six months. I am in full costume, backstage with the usual cast of characters. I bend down to give Emme and Max a kiss before my mom walks them off to watch the opening of the show. This was going to be the first time they’d see their mommy perform in front of thousands and thousands of people. The last time I was on stage like this, they were in my belly.

As they walk away, Emme looks back and stops. I’m being buckled into the rig on a twelve-by-twelve-inch platform. The huge, full-feather train of my white skirt pours over the edges and it must seem to her like I’m standing in a cloud. She seems a little nervous, but excited. I’m nervous, but controlling my fear. I’m about to ascend sixty feet into the air. I know it’s crazy, because the crew is watching with faces that say, This is crazy! I give the operator the thumbs-up; he gives me the thumbs-up in return... and up I go, disappearing into the rafters until I am perched behind a huge video wall, where nobody can see me.

Emme looks up, watching me rise and rise and rise... From my perspective, everybody looks like little ants on the floor. I take a deep breath and think about the past year, all the hard work and the hard lessons that have led to this moment.

If I let myself, I could go weak in the knees. But I don’t. I hold strong as the band plays the dramatic intro while the opening movie plays on the screen. And when the video wall splits open, I’m standing there, a hundred feet above the audience, and the crowd goes wild. The spotlight hits me, and in my best old Hollywood voice I say: “HELLO, LOVERS.”

•••

In this book I’m going to take you on the physical and emotional journey of the year I went on the first world tour of my career. The year that changed my life.

When I started planning the tour, I knew it was going to be the anchor for a very personal show. What I didn’t expect was how cathartic it would end up being for me. The process of building the tour and performing it each and every night for audiences around the world helped me get back to who I am—someone who sings, who dances, who expresses herself and connects with people through music.

So many times I wanted to abandon writing this book because I knew it would be a difficult process, delving into the past and reliving some of my darkest moments. Also, I didn’t want to be misread. I didn’t want anything to overshadow the magnificence of this great journey. This book is not a detailed account of any of my relationships, famous or not. This is not a “tell-all,” so I hope that’s not what you’re looking for. But by the end, I think you’ll agree, you’ll have gotten so much more. This book is about a series of patterns that go back as early as my childhood. This book is about my path and what I learned. It’s the story of a transformative journey where I faced some of my greatest challenges, overcame some of my biggest fears, and emerged a stronger person than I’ve ever been. This is the story of how I discovered... the truest love of all.

My genuine intention and what I hope to accomplish with this book is that others can draw upon the experiences that changed the course of my life and find encouragement in the mantra that motivated the following pages:

You will live.

You will love.

You will dance again...

I

I wake up in bed alone. The silence in my room reminds me of the emptiness in my heart. I failed at love—again. Except this time, it wasn’t just me. I am haunted by the inescapable thought that I let down my beautiful babies, Max and Emme. I wanted so badly for things to have turned out differently.

As lonely as this bed feels, I can’t bring myself to get out of it.

ROCK BOTTOM

HITTING ROCK BOTTOM

I remember the exact moment when everything changed. I was in the desert outside Los Angeles, getting ready for a photo shoot.

It was a beautiful day in July 2011, and Marc and I had just celebrated our seventh wedding anniversary. Anybody looking from the outside in would have thought my life was going great: I had a husband and two beautiful children, and my career was flying high. I was on American Idol, the number-one show on the planet, and my new single “On the Floor” had gone to number one all over the world. To top it off, People magazine had named me their very first Most Beautiful Woman in the World, a few months earlier. How could life get any better?

What people didn’t know was that life really wasn’t that good. My relationship was falling apart, and I was terrified.

And now here I was out in the desert, getting made up for a L’Oral shoot. I had done hundreds of these before—you sit in the chair, get your hair and face made up, go out in front of the camera, and do your thing. But this day didn’t feel like any other day.

As I sat there, my mind was racing. My heart was beating out of my chest, and I felt like I couldn’t breathe... I became consumed with fear and anxiety. What was happening to me?

My mom, Guadalupe, who lives in New York and happened to be in town that week, came to the desert with me that day, and my dear manager, Benny Medina, was there too. As I found myself in a panic, I leaped from my chair and said, “Benny, something is happening! I feel like I’m going crazy.”

In the end, the truth finds a way to surface, even if you don’t want it to.

Benny, who has been through so much with me over the fifteen years we have worked together and been friends, took my hands.

“Hey, now, what’s happening? What’s going on?” he asked.

My mom rushed to my side, too, a look of concern on her face.

All I could say was, “I don’t know. I don’t feel right. I’m scared. I feel like I’m losing my mind.”

He tried to calm me down, saying, “You’re fine, Jennifer. You’re good. Everything’s okay.” To him I looked completely calm. But I wasn’t. It was one of those moments when you’re so scared you can’t even scream. It feels as if you’re paralyzed.

We as human beings do this thing where we stuff down our feelings until they find a way to manifest themselves. We try to avoid them until there’s no more room and they come bubbling up like a pot of boiling-hot water that overflows. And when it does, it burns, and it’s scary. That’s what was happening to me.

In a blur of fear and panic, I looked at Benny and my mother and blurted out the words: “I don’t think I can be with Marc anymore.” Then I burst into tears.

It was out.

The one thing I feared more than anything in the world. The one thing I had been trying for so long not to face. Deep down, I knew that nothing would ever be the same again.

I collapsed into their arms and began to sob. And like that pot of boiling-hot water, once it overflows, the pressure is released and it begins to cool down. All those crazy thoughts started to melt away because I had finally given voice to the real reason for my fear and panic. I knew what it meant to say those words out loud: It meant the end of my marriage. The end of our family. The end of the dream I had worked so hard to hold together.

And it meant more than that. It meant that once again I was going to be judged. I was going to be ridiculed, chastised, and mocked. I could already see the headlines: “Jennifer Lopez Headed for Divorce... Again!” Or, “The Woman Who Has Everything But Can’t Get Love Right!” I was so scared to have another failure, to be scrutinized by the world, and to disappoint everyone... again.

But this time wasn’t like any other time. It was worse. This divorce wouldn’t affect just Marc and me. It would affect these two beautiful little souls we had brought into the world. I was devastated at the thought of hurting Max and Emme. I was afraid that I was about to ruin their lives, that someday they would resent me for not being able to keep this marriage together.

As I struggled with the idea of breaking up my family, I had to consider what was best for my kids in the long run, and I agonized over what would serve them best in life. I was pulled in both directions, which is why I had fought so hard against admitting the inevitable. I couldn’t admit that this marriage was over. But in the end, the truth finds a way to surface, even if you don’t want it to. That day in the desert, with my brain going wild trying to deny reality, I had finally hit rock bottom.

HOPE FOR A BETTER DAY

On Christmas day in 2010, seven months before that L’Oral photo shoot, we had a house full of people. Marc was there, and Emme and Max, and Marc’s other kids, Ryan and Cristian, Arianna and Alex, as well as our parents, siblings, and friends. It was the kind of Christmas gathering I’d always wanted to have: a big, sprawling affair with our family at the center of it.

The house was filled with food and gifts and laughter, and that afternoon, twenty-four of us sat down to a beautiful Christmas dinner. Things between Marc and me weren’t perfect, of course—our marriage was never the kind to glide along peacefully. From the beginning, it was tumultuous, passionate, and explosive, but we also shared many fulfilling and joyful moments. I knew we had problems, but we loved each other and we were trying, and I wanted more than anything to have a family—this family. So I was willing to ignore whatever wasn’t going well, for the greater good of preserving it.

I thought that Christmas was exactly what I wanted. I thought we were finally getting it right, that it was worth putting up with the difficulties because this was what life was about. Every marriage has its challenges, but it was about keeping that marriage together, having that family unit, and making the dream come true—whatever the cost. Part of that concept still holds true for me: Family is most important.

But the very next Christmas, twelve months later, I was waking up alone. The only people in the house were Max, Emme, and my cousin Tiana, who had come to keep me company. My mother and my sisters, Lynda and Leslie, had decided to stay in New York for the holidays, and they had asked me to come out, but I didn’t want to go. I wanted to be in my own home, as empty as it now felt.

I cried a lot that Christmas, though I tried to let the tears flow only when the kids couldn’t see me. There’s nothing like the holidays to make you feel a loss, and I was really feeling it. But then my dad, David, came over for Christmas dinner, and Benny came and brought his mom. So with Emme, Max, and everyone else, we had a pretty full table—even if it wasn’t as full as the one we had the year before.

What I will always remember about that Christmas is not the tears or the loneliness, but the toast that Benny gave.

Great for fans, not for anyone else
By Amazon Customer
I think you would like this book if you are a Jennifer Lopez fan.

The problem is that I'm not. I don't hate her or anything, I'm just not a fan. I read the book because I am also contemplating ending my marriage, and I have a child that is caught up in this mess. And I liked the synopsis that I read online.

The problem is, that the synopsis of this book is about as good as it gets. I feel like the whole book is written in platitudes. "You can't truly love someone until you love yourself," and all that sort of stuff. Don't get me wrong, I agree with pretty much everything she said, but I'm not sure why she decided to write the book.

Most of the book, is spent describing her recent world tour, how different parts of the performance symbolized her life, and how the tour changed her life. This is probably interesting to fans, especially those who when to see her on tour, but I found it pretty boring.

I wanted more. I wanted her to explain how she thinks she could prevent herself from being mistreated in the future. She makes vague statements about not respecting herself, and vague references to verbal and emotional (possibly physical?) abuse, but doesn't say much beyond that. I don't want to read a blow-by-blow about her relationships, but she is so vague about everything in her life that you are left wondering what the book is about. If you are going to write a deep book and title it true love, then you really have to put in some specifics somewhere.

After reading the book, I am certain that her divorce agreement probably had some clause that barred either party from discussing their marriage in public. As a result the book is a great description of her world tour, but a lousy book on love and marriage. I respect Jennifer Lopez, and I'm glad that she got out of what was probably a bad situation, but this was not an interesting read for me. I'm probably the only non-fan to have read this book (silly me).

Both my wife and I read this introspective autobiography by Jennifer Lopez, a woman we have long admired. At times eye-watering, we must understand that fame and fortune really doesn't change what we still need out of life.

My name is Tommy Barnett.

I’m a pastor and have devoted my entire adult life to helping people connect with God and find better ways to live. I could fill up this book and more with all kinds of spiritual and practical ideas about what works in life and what doesn’t. I think it would be good stuff, but I have one practical idea that I know from my own experience rises far above all the others.

I admit it’s not an overly unique concept, like the invention of the Internet, for example. However, it’s an idea that has helped me realize success and great satisfaction in all aspects of my personal and professional life. I mean everything—from personal goals and dreams to marriage to raising a family to relationships to work.

I believe the idea can change your life, though, as it has changed mine.

Most importantly, it has helped me serve God and others more effectively. Trust me, my idea is not rocket science; in fact, it’s so simple that anyone can understand and benefit from it.

I believe the idea can change your life, though, as it has changed mine. I call it the power of a half hour.

Many people think of a half hour as a minimal or meaningless gap in time, downtime to catch your breath between periods of major effort. But the truth is your half hours can determine the difference between success and failure. Your half hours direct and shape your future.

You can literally change your world in thirty minutes. In the same way that your effect on the world is felt one life at a time, so is that effect delivered through the careful and thoughtful investment of your half hours. The beauty of this reality is that anyone can do it. You don’t need a PhD, and you don’t need a life coach to pull it off. All you need is to accept the idea, have a clear sense of your God-given purpose, examine your activity patterns, sensitize yourself to your time choices, and start taking advantage of the power of a half hour.

Every half hour in your day is a power-loaded resource. Your choice of how to spend those minutes is the focus of this book, which I intend to make a practical conversation about a resource that we misunderstand, abuse, take for granted, and ignore.

I want to help you become the person God intends you to be and accomplish His plans for your life. And in order to do that, you need to use your small increments of time wisely—not just the big slices of time that are devoted to both routine daily activities and major life events.

I agree with Harvey Mackay who said, “Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.”

I know that it’s not easy to find even a “free” hour in the world we live in. I also have learned that it’s difficult to accomplish a great deal in a quarter hour—especially if you need to communicate graciously and genuinely with another person within that time frame. But a half hour—it works!

Claiming the Power of a Half Hour

Here’s how we will approach turning your half hours into life-changing blocks of time. In the seven parts of this book, I will outline how seizing the power of a half hour can make such a difference in these major areas:
• Impact
• Purpose and goals
• Faith
• Character
• Dreams
• Relationships
• Advancing God’s kingdom

To help you remember key themes in this book, each chapter contains a Half-Hour Power Principle.

By the way, researchers tell us that most people never finish reading the books they start. Because I think there’s too much helpful information in these pages for you to abandon the content before you get to the end, let me suggest that you do four simple but practical things as you read this book.

First, read the book in half-hour spaces in your schedule. Each of the chapters in the book is short enough to read easily in a half hour. You might want to have more than one block during a day when you read the book, but start this practice as you engage with this book. In addition, at the back of this book you will find a Personal Power of a Half Hour Action Plan. This plan is set up to help you, over a thirty-day period, fully incorporate The Power of a Half Hour
concepts into all major areas of your life. You have heard that it takes about a month to establish a new habit? I urge you to use this thirty-day plan to make the power of a half hour a habit you will never break!

Second, if something strikes you as personally helpful, jot down notes about changes you need to make. Too often we are so intent on getting through a book that we forget some of the useful insights or challenges it provided.

Third, pray that God will help you to implement the things you discover in these pages (or in your related reflections) that will improve your life experience. Fourth, and finally, express a commitment to someone you know and trust that you are going to integrate these simple changes into your lifestyle. Ask that person to check up on you once or twice a month to see how intentional you are being with your half hours. That simple act of accountability will help prevent the reading of this book from being just another helpful but forgotten task. (You may also wish to find mutual encouragement in learning the half-hour concepts by attending a small-group discussion. A guide for such a study is included at the end of the book.)

I’ve been practicing these principles so long that I can now say I am a product of my half hours. I don’t always get it right, but I’m very much aware of the gift of life and the value of time. My half hours—the ones I carefully plan, aswell as the unplanned ones I discover—are committed to doing His will in my life because I want to serve our God and others.

I’ve been practicing these principles so long that I can now say I am a product of my half hours.

If you get your half hours right, God will not only change your life but also use you to alter the lives of the people and organizations you influence. I sincerely believe the future is not going to be defined by those who rely on their intelligence, their talent, or their good looks. Instead, the future is dependent on the choices made by God’s people in the time that He has placed at our disposal.

Not what I expected
By DY
I found this book in my local bookstore in the business management section. Based on the description I expected it to be a time management and productivity book with an emphasis on living a balanced (Christian) life. Instead it was mainly an anecdotal book from a Pentecostal minister regarding the ways he believes God has used him in ministry. It might be worth reading if you were looking for inspirational stories for church building, but if you are primarily interested in a time management book this is not it.

All It Takes Is Half An Hour
By Dane R. Swanson
You really can't know the value of time. There is a lot that can happen in a small segment of the day. Barnett suggests that a small portion of the day can mean so much to the rest of the time. Nothing he suggests is impossible to implement. It is written in an easy to follow style. The tone is conversational. It is like having a friend walking along with you with advise'
This book is a must for those who wonder the value of time.

Can You Afford Half an Hour?
By jemedm
Tommy Barnett has written another self-help book – just what we need in our world! Yes, that was oozing with sarcasm; so, if you missed it, go back and reread that opening line. The Power of Half an Hour is a simplistic book, and the author admits so in the introduction. Yet, that simplicity is what attracted me to the book. Far too often, humanity likes to overcomplicate the things that are simply crystal clear.

If you choose to tackle this book, I do want to throw out two specific cautions: (1) heed the advice of the author -- do not “race” through the book but take it one chapter a day for a month by jotting down thoughts; and (2) halt the tendency to move on immediately to the next self-help/leadership book. Therein is part of our problem! We move from one book or one fad or one practice to the next without mastering the previous one.

Barnett’s idea that 30 minutes, if used correctly, can change your life is absolutely correct. Whether we believe it or not, we are defined by our moments. The private moments that hardly anyone can see are what shape our lives, character, success, and work. What he espouses is obviously a Biblical principal: Ephesians 5:16 says “Making the most of your time because the days are evil” (NASB). He quotes a man named Harvey Mackay who said it quite well: “Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.” (xii)

The book is organized into 30 chapters and is designed to be read inside of 30 minutes; so the author is reinforcing his own premise by design. Each section has a “Half Hour Power Principle” and the last few pages of the book include a daily personal action plan. Barnett has established a simple and useable format to assist any and all readers that wish to improve. Everyone has 30 minutes a day that can be set aside for personal and spiritual development, so we do not have an excuse (unless we admit our laziness).

I encourage you to do what the author says in the “tag” line of the book’s title – take back your life thirty minutes at a time. You can do it, but the question is: will you do it? Life is too short to drift aimlessly. Take 30 minutes and set the direction with God’s help.

The Legend of Starcrash, by Dolores Cannon

Through regressive hypnosis, a lost legend of the history of mankind has been retrieved from the recesses of time. Did the American Indians descend from the inhabitants of an alien spacecraft that crashed in the Alaska-Canada region thousands of years ago? Keepers of the Garden told the story of the original seeding of the planet Earth by aliens from outerspace. Starcrash indicates that aliens continue to come to Earth, some intentionally and some by accident, throughout our history. In order to adjust to harsh conditions, they were forced to interbreed with the local aborigines. This was the only way to ensure the survival of their race. Does their blood still flow in the veins of certain American Indian tribes? Dolores Cannon, hypnotist and psychic investigator, researches this unique case of past-life regression.

Who Came First, the Chicken or the Egg, OR...
By billiusmaxx
Dolores Cannon's warm and inquisitive, yet non-obstinate approach in dealing with her subjects and their spirit entities under regressive hypnosis gives much credence to the integrity of the subject matter. This book stages the probable seeding and origin of our ancestors, and WOW!, is it a mindbender. Tuin, who is the main character and tribal hunter for the commune, delivers interesting insights to the societal structure and specialized importance each member's responsibility brings to the tribal commune. In a naive and innocent manner, Tuin relates his adventuresome and somewhat rascally personality within a warm and caring community, which in a primitive way appears more advanced and evolved than our current existence.
That's not all! The latter part of the book, Dolores explores Tuin's higher spiritual nature, giving a sophisticated glimpse at the unfolding of human history. For those of you who have interest in the migration of man to North America and the Native American role in that perspective, this is a MUST book. Why, we even get a glimpse into to the effect of the great prehistorical asteroid hit on earth. Great, easy, and believable reading. An opportunity to enhance one's enlightenment.

THE LEGEND OF STARCRASH
Through regressive hypnosis a lost legend of the history of mankind has been retrieved from the recesses of time. Did the American Indians descend from the inhabitants of an alien spacecraft that crashed in the Alaska-Canada region thousands of years ago? Keepers of the Garden told the story of the original seeding of the plant Earth by aliens from outer space. Starcrash indicates that aliens continued to come to Earth, some intentionally and by accident, throughout our history. In order to adjust to harsh conditions and the brutal rays of an alien sun, the survivors were forced to interbreed with the local aborigines. This was the only way to insure the survival of their race. Does their blood still flow in the veins of certain American Indian tribes?

Alien Awesome!
By Utahna Tassie
We may soon find ourselves in this very situation! About 5,000 people had to leave their very overcrowded planet, knowing full well that they would be living on a space ship for several generations before reaching their destination (another planet where the atmosphere was compatible with their bodies) and that if they left, they were never to return (sounds like my parents when I was a teenager). One of the 3 ships had a serious malfunction (that was probably a result of tampering with a time-release sort of factor to sabotage them after the point of no return) and was forced to make a new home on Earth. It was a really great thing that they happened to land near a very remote, primitive civilization with no contact with the outside world. I could understand the fear both groups had for each other and the necessity to interbreed for the survival of both species. This story was told through a client under hypnosis who went to Dolores Cannon for therapy to help with a reoccurring dream. In the bigger picture, there are no accidents. I feel this legend is very true and correct.
