Christian, clean romance where tragedy meets faith

This story is a drama and romance with bible quotes, questions of faith, and a heartwarming story of love and redemption. I enjoyed the storyline of the hero who experiences a tragic accident that shakes him to the core as well as his faith.

I liked that the story offered an incident that might shake anyone's belief in life and good. Also, how the author allowed the storyline to unfold and didn't rush revealing the twist or the romance that has time to grow.

Then there are those kids. Caroline won my heart. From the moment Karlee describes her pupil, Caroline, I wanted a good outcome for her. The theme of family and friends being there for each other and never giving up in each is a strong and satisfying element to this story.

Family and friends refuse to give up on Eli, and his struggle feels real. It's a tough situation that absorbed me into the story. I wanted to see how it was play out, and overall it delivered.

I recognized some characters from the author's wonderful Wounded Souls series, which is not a Christian, clean romance series, but has strong storylines and characters. It was a nice addition.

For me, the Christian references were a bit much and took away from the story after a while, and there were a couple of coincidences that were a bit of a stretch.

This would be perfect for readers who want a faith-based, clean (no sex) romance with a test-of-faith and family values.

FULL OF INSPIRATION, LOVE AND DEVOTION....

After a long shift as a firefighter, Elijah Harris was on his way home, tired but on top of the world. He loved being able to help people. He had a great job, loving friends and family and the most important part of his life, he had his belief in God. All was well, until his faith was tested by witnessing a horrific accident. He couldn't save the man that was begging him to and he barely made it out himself. Why would God forsake him like this? How could he give everything to God and not be able to do what he was trained to do? So many questions without answers and they were not being answered. So instead of buckling down and praying, he ran.

Karlee was going to get married. She was going to have 2.5 children with her wonderful fianc�e Timothy. Teaching children by day and planning her future by night. With God in her corner, nothing could go wrong. Until it did. Losing Timothy in that accident wasn't something she was prepared for. Her perfect world as she knew it, was over.

Until God stepped in with his plan and brought Elijah and Karlee together in a twist of fate or is it God's plan. Follow these two on their journey to finding themeselves, possibly each other and their restored faith. Only God can guide their faith.....

WOW, WOW, WOW...This book was amazing. My heart broke for both Karlee and Eli. Going through so many different emotions but oddly some similar ones after Timothy's death. Although the first part of the book focuses on Eli and his struggle with not only not being able to save Timothy, but also his faith. I loved that he tried to run and drink his beliefs away, but who can really run from God, he's everywhere and Eli soon finds out when he meets Karlee and Caroline. That little girl was such an instrumental part of their story (not saying, you have to read it to know who I'm talking about).
I think we have all questioned our faith once in our life and this book was a testament that if we follow the path that God puts forth without question, we will be rewarded. This book gave my faith a boost and I loved all the characters and I can't wait for Charlie's story. Have to read to know. The writing was awesome and the story flowed. You could feel Amanda Lansclos' amazing faith and love for God pour out of this story. I applaud her writing and faith in God. I hope everyone feels as lighthearted after reading this as I did. Enjoy!

Not for me

I did not like the writing style of this author, so the first couple captures were really rough. But then the second half of the book, actually got worse. I truly don't see any point to the chapters after Eli's car accident. The alcoholism is miraculously fixed, without God. They live together for a few weeks, even though they don't believe in it. And there are a multiple new characters introduced that add nothing. They are being called mom and dad...after a couple weeks... by teenagers when they aren't married, or living together or adopted. Then they still don't get married for 2 years at the epilogue.
The only redeeming value was the authors use a scripture, but even then it was just "found" by randomly thumbing through the bible.

About the Author

J.-C. Spender, ESADE, Universitat Ramon Llull, Visiting Professor

J.-C. Spender trained initially as a nuclear engineer, and worked for Rolls-Royce & Associates, IBM, and as a merchant banker. He completed his PhD in Strategic Management at the Manchester Business School, which won the 1980 Academy of Management AT Kearney Prize. This was later published as Industry Recipes (Blackwell 1989). After being on the faculty at various universities including the Cass School, York University (Toronto), UCLA, University of Glasgow, and Rutgers, J.-C. Spender retired in 2003 as Dean of the School of Technology & Business at SUNY/FIT. Masterpiece but long and repetitive

I bought and read this book because it was picked out as a top book in strategy by Business & Strategy.
First, I try to summarize what is said here. The book emphasizes forward-looking subjectivity, constructivism and human heterogeneity.
The shift from operations to planning and further to strategy is discussed. The era of managerial capitalism aimed at efficiency, Taylor in production, Chandler in administration. During this era of managerial capitalism, "pre-WW2 writings about management ... presumed managers were completely in charge for the enterprise and knew it holistically from top to bottom". Operations research and other WW2 lessons learnt had a large impact to the use of rational planning methods. The author writes that the shift away from managerial capitalism to strategy meant a shift from seeking efficiency to seeking rent by differentiation and focusing on competition to the detriment of only internal operations. Was this really so simple - or was it so that value chain and other process methods since the 1980s and enterprise architecture platforms since the 1990s integrated positioning/differentiation with efficiency and transparency.
The author is critical especially towards consultants - "the absence of progression in (their) strategic thinking in spite of the great changes to economy at large and to how business is done..." - and uses expressions such as fifty-year old concepts and retro-ware. I agree but isn't the apparent lack of progress true only in the sense that "new" strategy is still a fragmented patchwork, no holistic treatment has yet been written. But this book is an attempt.
The central role of knowledge absence and epistemology to strategy is highlighted so that the author's definition of strategizing includes what some people may call insighting which I think is historically underestimated but the essence of any "new" strategy. Many strategy books such as Rumelt and Kaplan & Norton move towards planning where the most of the consultancy money lies, this moves backwards.
The author defines the field of strategy as "finding a knowledge absence to plunge into", and strategizing as "the judgment of or imaginative response to what is NOT known, to the surprising, unexpected, incomplete, or illogical nature of what arises through our practice...the interplay of identity, intent and content ... analyzed to uncover and identify knowledge absences in Nature (ignorance), in each other (indeterminacy) and in ourselves (incommensurability)".
And further, "strategic work addresses the knowledge absences at the interfaces between identity, intention, and context ... respond(s) to knowledge absences with relevant judgments...make(s) this all in to structured practice, a methodological view of dealing with uncertainties ...as a collaborative multi-person activity".
This emphasis on imagination and surprises to the detriment of "rational man" brings entrepreneurship and dynamics to strategy.
The author sees strategizing largely as knowledge management - I'd rather like to call it knowledge networking - and classifies unknowns aka knowledge absence into three categories. Ignorance is the lack of objective knowledge which is somewhere there, static, waiting for discovery. I interpreted this mostly as business intelligence. Indeterminacy means the lack of knowledge about others and their responses to our actions. I interpreted this as customer, market and competitor intelligence. This category of unknowns can be effected by, e.g., negotiating. Incommensurability means fragmentation, misfit and inability to put together different perspectives and types of knowledge into a coherent picture, because of talking past each other. The author associates data with ignorance, meaning with indeterminacy, and practice with incommensurability. These are the three types of knowing where practice is always specific, situated and unique, never general.
The author emphasizes natural language and "strategic talk" as the only means to communicate and evolve the idiosyncratic and unique character of the business model, as recently enabled by social media. He (at least indirectly) seems to criticize consultants and tools on putting the ease of use over analytic power. But many consultants like me are big fans of good visualizations, worth thousands of words, and dislike prose. Paradoxically the book follows its own line of reasoning by curly natural language and should have more structure and less text in it.
Near the end of the book the author characterizes it as a "supermarket of ideas". Instead of wanting to tell everything the book would be more useful in practice if edited. The author seems to know (because he writes) that the book is partly repetitive, to the extent that it is in some places even (subjectively) boring, but not at all difficult to read for non-English like me.
To conclude, the book points towards new strategy which is about people, dynamics and entrepreneurship, and it is an ambitious summary of the history and tools of strategy. To my mind the long and repetitive style does not decrease the value of the book but requires that you really want to read it. I wonder how many business managers have the required time and patience, maybe some of them need a middleman or an interpreter for the purpose.

One of our best business books for 2014

In Business Strategy: Managing Uncertainty, Opportunity, and Enterprise, J.-C. Spender takes what he calls the "entrepreneurial" path to corporate growth and market response. To the peripatetic business professor and retired dean of the School of Business & Technology at SUNY/Fashion Institute of Technology, strategy is the product of executive imagination and judgment, not just logic; the strategy process involves balancing the known, the unknown, and the unknowable. The purpose of strategic analyses, frameworks, and methods is to inspire inventiveness and inform judgment.

Spender arrives at this position by comparing the quantitative planning techniques popular in organizations after World War II--which were mostly developed by the military during the war--with the more subjective, less rigid strategic methodologies that appeared in the 1980s and that are now widespread in the business world. In the earlier era, the dominant idea was to match a firm's resources to the market's demands. The company's business model was tailored to customer needs, suppliers' offerings, labor availability, logistics, and the like. If a mismatch occurred, the resulting inefficiencies would reduce profit and threaten the firm's survival.

By contrast, explains Spender, the modern strategy process must be a much more forward-looking activity, because efficiency is no longer enough to deliver a decisive strategic advantage in many industries; instead, a so-called monopoly-based strategic advantage is needed. He cites Apple's dominance of the tablet business to illustrate the overwhelming necessity of innovation as a means of securing sustainable, above-normal profits, "especially where the `windows of competitive advantage' seem to be opening and closing with increasing speed."

Business Strategy does an extremely thorough job of surveying the consulting tools and academic economic models and theories available to corporate strategists. The book describes in some detail the salient facets of the most essential methodologies and concepts, including SWOT, Porter's five forces, the experience curve, the balanced scorecard, the value chain, horizontal and vertical integration, and more. But again and again, Spender returns to the notion that companies must avoid letting these tools stymie their flexibility by over-objectifying decision making. Ultimately, he argues, added value stems from the strategist's choices--the entrepreneur's imagination and judgment--not from reams of analysis or data-based conclusions.

By way of example, Spender compares two strategic milestones: IBM's decision in the 1940s to turn down the patents and processes for electrophotography developed by Chester Carlson, which became the basis of the Xerox machine, and Intel's ceding of the DRAM market to low-cost Japanese competitors in the 1980s in order to focus on microprocessors. Based on market conditions at the time, IBM believed the customer base for electrophotography was too small and chose to sit on the sidelines; Intel, meanwhile, decided it could build a monopolistic position in microprocessors when neither the market potential nor the manufacturing challenges were well understood. In Spender's view, IBM hewed to the safety of the known to its detriment, whereas Intel rode the wave of strategic risk by using data analyses as the basis of a calculated leap into the unknown and unknowable.

Spender devotes a chapter in the book to the role of executives in communicating the organization's strategy to employees so that it is effectively executed. And although he delves deeply into a variety of techniques for disseminating a company's strategic program (rhetorical, formal and informal, group and individual), he concedes that if successful strategies--and, indeed, successful companies--are built on imagination, motivating people to collaborate requires equally inspired approaches. As Spender advises: "The rhetorical practice that shapes the creative actions of others is precisely what makes the modern firm possible."

Executives will ignore at their peril the fundamental message of Business Strategy: Once-popular mechanistic planning methodologies no longer work; they have been replaced by innovation-based models that demand flexibility and creativity. A choice to use anything less, Spender argues, is the precursor of corporate atrophy.

This is an unconventional book by an unconventional scholar. Spender has a wide ranging mind that is not encumbered by what most academics (or practitioners) think. Many of the ideas are provocative and fresh, but not easily implemented due to their highly abstract nature. I like how this book makes you think.

158 pages of quality information and photographs actually written about this rare but growing breed. Covers all aspects particular to the breed from puppy to senior years including temperment and traits particular to the Spanish Water Dog. This volume is NOT a cut and paste production built around a template to sell pet products. A previous reviewer expressed a cut and paste impression. Portions of the book on general health care are obviously provided by the publisher for the series which this is volume 332. The author has adhered to an outline yet tailored her writing to give an objective and complete discussion specific for this somewhat unusual medium sized nonshedding herding and working water dog. The only attribute not covered is the interaction of the breed's wooly coat and snow.

A not so comprehensive guide

I was most excited to receive my copy of the SWD Comprehensive Review. While the book is informative with tons of photographs it was too general for my liking. I was expecting it to be written more breed specific in all aspects and to tell me some things I didn't already know. It is almost like the SWD was just plugged into many sections as those pertain to all breeds. The sections on general doggie training and health were just that, general almost everyday information that most dog owners already know or rely upon their vet to take care of for them. If a picture is worth 1,000 words then the pictures in this book must make up the selling price. Other than that, the information was stuff I already knew before falling in love with the breed. I am disappointed.

Generic but better than nothing.

Until this book was published, the only information regarding the breed was written in Spanish. I applaud the authors for their attempt to educate the English-speaking people of the world with regards to this ancient breed. The photos alone are reason to purchase a used copy of this book but when it comes to factual information on the history one should look elsewhere. I hope this book encourages other potential authors to conduct in-depth research by contacting the Association Espanola del Perro de Agua Espanol, the herders and fishermen of Spain before they attempt such a noteworthy undertaking.

It is estimated that over 3.5 million people in the United States now have congestive heart failure and that 5.7 million will be affected by 2030. The incidence of heart failure increases with age, and congestive heart failure is now the leading cause of hospitalization among persons who are older than 65 years of age. Seventeen percent of patients with congestive heart failure are being cared for by cardiologists, 43 percent by internists, 29 percent by family practitioners, and 11 percent by other types of practitioners. Because of the high and increasing prevalence of congestive heart failure, it is important for a broad spectrum of physicians to be familiar with the symptoms and appropriate treatment of the condition.

Management of End-Stage Heart Disease serves the goal outlined by the editors in the preface, to "provide an overview of the nature and magnitude of the problem of end-stage heart disease and a comprehensive review of established and investigational therapies." The book has five major sections that cover the epidemiology and economics of heart failure and benchmarks for the assessment of therapy, medical therapies, conventional surgical approaches, cardiac transplantation and left ventricular assist devices, and novel surgical therapies such as ventriculectomy and dynamic cardiomyoplasty.

The first and last sections are most suited to cardiovascular specialists interested in heart transplantation and the management of congestive heart failure. The sections concerning medical therapy and standard surgical approaches are well written and appropriate in their breadth and depth. They will interest any physician caring for a patient who has congestive heart failure. Although the book is entitled Management of End-Stage Heart Disease, it clearly outlines management strategies for patients with less than end-stage disease.

The chapter by Francis, "Approach to the Patient with Severe Heart Failure," provides a seasoned and logical approach to the care of patients with congestive heart failure before and during hospitalization. Francis, like most of the other authors, has nearly two decades of experience in the management of heart failure. Young's chapter on adrenergic-blocking agents gives a valuable historical perspective and sets the stage for the use of newer beta-blocking drugs with partial alpha-adrenergic antagonism. The excellent chapters concerning the management of arrhythmias and the use of pacemakers in heart failure document the change in the paradigm for the treatment of arrhythmias in patients with cardiovascular disease, particularly those with heart failure. Mancini's chapter on the evaluation of exercise capacity in patients with heart failure is written primarily for specialists who must determine the functional capacity of and the potential outcome of heart transplantation in patients with end-stage disease. Her chapter is a state-of-the-art analysis of the components of diminished exercise capacity in patients with heart failure, including cardiac, pulmonary, and peripheral-muscle deficiencies. Stevenson provides a segue to the surgical components of the book in her analysis of the types of heart failure that require surgery.

Chapters concerning conventional surgical options for the management of heart failure are driven more by experience than data. Pagani and Bolling provide an excellent assessment of the risks and benefits of valve replacement in patients with ventricular compromise. The section on myocardial replacement, particularly transplantation, is most valuable in addressing the societal need to evaluate the cost and benefits of replacement therapies. The chapter concerning left ventricular assist devices provides an excellent overview of the sometimes confusing modes of heart support, including extracorporeal centrifugal, extracorporeal pulsatile, and implantable devices. The remainder of the surgical chapters, concerning artificial hearts and axial flow pumps, and the section on myocardial-enhancement therapies will be of benefit and interest only to specialists.

The editors, a cardiac surgeon and a cardiologist working in the area of heart failure and transplantation, have assembled authors to address not only the medical and surgical management of heart failure, but also the epidemiology and economics of this condition. The book documents the progress in this exciting area and should be read by all physicians training or practicing in the sub-subspecialty of heart failure and heart transplantation. The work will be of greatest value to the internists and generalists who care for the vast majority of patients with heart failure and who may have limited time to assimilate the wealth of available information in this rapidly changing field.

The book has three limitations, two of which reflect my bias and that of the editors. First, many chapters appear to reflect Stevenson's approach of tailored medical therapy, which mandates right-heart catheterization and the use of intravenous agents in patients with heart failure to optimize hemodynamics. Although this approach is novel, it has not yet been proved to be of greater benefit than standard approaches for hospitalized patients. Second, the book does not discuss the utility of endomyocardial biopsy in patients with congestive heart failure. Finally, the text has not been heavily edited, and many of the introductory sections are the same in various chapters.

It is evident from this book that the area of heart failure and transplantation has great potential for development as molecular and engineering advances are combined. The rate of advancement in this area will be limited only by issues of health care economics. Management of End-Stage Heart Disease appropriately summarizes our knowledge in the field to date.
