These are a wealth of information and enjoyable reading. Sword of the Lord There can be little disagreement with the claim that next to the Bible itself, the hymnal is a book of primary importance in the Christian ministry. About the Author
Kenneth W. Osbeck (MA, University of Michigan) taught for thirty-five years, first at Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music, and then at Grand Rapids Baptist College and Seminary. He also served as music director for Children s Bible Hour, Radio Bible Class, and several churches. He is the author of several books, including the best-selling Amazing Grace: 366 Inspiring Hymn Stories for Daily Devotions; 101 Hymn Stories; Hallelujah, What a Savior!; 25 Most Treasured Gospel Hymn Stories; and Joy to the World.

XLNT resource for Christians, especially home educators

101 More Hymns provides not only the histories of by-gone hymn authors and composers. It provides the complete sheet music. Some of these hymns are not found in the current hymn books. This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in older hymns and hymn histories. My children highly recommend this book as does as their mother.

Go beyond praise and worship

When I first became a Christian about 8 years ago, I somehow got the idea that praise and worship music was the truly "spiritual music" - hymns were old-fashioned, and people who enjoyed them did so because they were hide-bound by tradition. If you're thinking this now, please listen to me.
A year or so ago I heard about well-known and respected Christians like John MacArthur and Joni Eareckson Tada talk about how the old hymns were so meaningful to them and really strengthened their faith. That got me thinking: so it's not just stodgy old 80-year olds who love those old hymns. Maybe there's something to them after all.
So I got this book. And I have been so blessed by it. God has shown me that true worship is so much more than just a feeling. He wants all parts of me - my body, my soul, and my spirit - to be involved in worship. So many in churches today are satisfied with getting only their spirits involved; some want their body involved too (lifting hands, etc.); but the truly mature (I am coming to believe) also get their souls (or minds) involved. Your mind doesn't get involved when you just repeat "Isn't He" fifty times; it does when you sing (and really think about) the wonderful words to songs like "O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" or "Blessed Assurance."
Both these songs and many, many more are covered in this book. Get it, sing the songs, think about what Christ has done for you, think about the circumstances of their writing. And take your worship to another level.

Excellent summary of the all-time best 101 hymns

This 288-page book summarizes the most favorite 101 hymns used by main-line Protestant churches. Although it was written in 1982, it is selling well (my copy is the 11th printing in 1990) and its content will continue to be current. At a bargain price of about $10, Osbeck's book represents exceptionally good value.

The author appears quite well-qualified with a Master's degree in music from the University of Michigan and over 40 years of experience in church music.

The full hymn is printed, then Ken Osbeck provides a one-page summary of the author's life with focus on the circumstances of how each hymn came to be written.

I found it very helpful and insightful to learn the story-behind-the-story of each hymn. These poignant insights are very useful in explaining the hymn in Sunday school classes and to the entire congregation.

This book has my full recommendation, and for just ten dollars, it represents good value as well. The book is very readable for laypersons. (This reviewer is a geologist and not a professional musician.)

Dave MacLean is a software engineer and architect living and working in Jacksonville, Florida. Since 1980, he has programmed in many languages, developing solutions ranging from robot automation systems to data warehousing, from web self-service applications to electronic data interchange transaction processors. Dave has worked for Sun Microsystems, IBM, Trimble Navigation, General Motors, and several small companies. Satya Komatineni has been programming for more than 20 years in the IT and Web space. Old book with a new cover - highly outdated information

Let me start by saying that this is the Pro Android 4 book with an updated cover.

I am normally a fan of Apress books, but this one is a notable exception.

I bought the "Alpha" of this book directly from the Apress site and was shocked to see, in the very first chapter, instructions for downloading and installing the Android SDK in Eclipse. This book was published a week before writing this review. Eclipse has not been supported on Android since January of this year. The authors have only passing references to Android Studio which is the official IDE.

Even getting past the outdated IDE instructions, many of the programming techniques shown, as well as the code examples, are highly outdated.

I strongly suggest staying clear of this book unless you want software and techniques that are no longer supported. It is a shame because past editions of this book were quite good, as well as Apress' iOS books.

Prepare to be frustrated

Most of the examples in this book simply don't work. There are numerous typos in class and method names. Examples are incomplete. They often display a method without specifying the class that is being extended or interface implemented. Most of the time I was able to search the Web to find the correct usage but it was a time consuming task. In an effort to pack in the most material there are too many shortcuts. I would have preferred less material that was complete.

I started my Android adventures with "Learn Android Studio" and must have been spoiled by that book. There, the examples worked almost all of the time (just a few exceptions). Once complete, I could make miscellaneous changes and see their affect. Completing an Exchange Rate Calculator from the start was a great learning experience. I thought this book would be a good in-depth follow up but it is not.

Note, I have been a Java programmer for 20 years.

Good book for new SE's

But, of course, any anesthesiologist who performs regional on a regular basis is fully aware of the frustration of attempting to locate nerves on a trial and error basis. Ultrasound imaging now enables us to visualize nerves, and this exciting technology offers several distinct benefits over conventional nerve locating techniques. The Atlas of Ultrasound and Nerve Stimulation-Guided Regional Anesthesia illustrates how to use ultrasound technology and nerve stimulation techniques to achieve consistently good results. Great for a beginner in this area.

I got it when this one is on sale at $2.99.
So I did not expect much from it; however, after I browsed for a while, it turned out to be one of the great books I own.
It introduces this topic in the straightforward fashion along with good examples and make everything less difficult than supposed to be.
Note that everything in this edition is exactly the same as the hardcover one costing more than $100.

Revised review
Random vibration composed of two things: Statistics and Vibrations. To understand well in the subject, it is necessary to have strong in Statistics. This book doesn't help much for this part so you'd better begin with some other basic statistical textbooks like Hsu's.

Unlike deterministic vibration, the random vibration problems are impossibly solved in time domain. Most of time, it is necessary to do the frequency analysis. This book will force you into this area a little early. I think it's better to practice the problems a little more. Then the book will bring you from Analog to Digital that requires the deep understanding of how to approximate the continuous functions to the discrete functions. It had taken me a few months to make some senses of random vibrations in the real applications.

I would say the topic is tough but don't be too discouraged. It is understandable.

This book is a easy to read material witch will give you the basic knowledge you should have to master computer vision and other related signal processing branches.
It uses intuitive proofs and explanations so if you are looking for a very abstract and deep book on signal processing you should not purchase this book.
Great for engineers and professionals, too basic for mathematicians.
